Right, I've just bought a new Ibanez RG370DX that's got a little bit of damage to the paintwork on the top horn. So I thought, aha, project time .

Over the next few months, budget allowing, I'm going to totally overhaul this guitar from a midrange to 'owns your face'.

Project Plan

Part 1 - Strip off old paint and refinish. I'll start the refinish by staining the wood red (after it's been stripped) and then apply a translucent black laquer over that.

Part 2 - Replacing Pickups. Probably (given that it's possible) Kerry King EMG set for the humbuckers, and an SD single coil for the middle pickup.

Part 3 - Possibly replacing Edge III with Floyd Rose Pro, just because I can.

Part 4 - Showing off.

Each stage will be started once i have time and money to do it, I'll keep you guys updated with how i'm getting on, pics too

Guitar arrives in the next couple of days, 'before' pics will be posted then

Tell me what you think of the idea please!

You'll have to route it to mix humbuckers and single coils. [EDIT: Don't quote me on that]

Sounds great though! Keep us updated.

I may just replace the 5 way with a 3 way selector, or use an EMG SC

Are the kerry king pups active? Because mixing activ and passive pups is hard, I hear.
#5
Yeah they are active, i may just use a 3-way selector to literally go H-S-H rather than the usual 5-way. Either that or i could use an EMG in the single coil position, just i wanted a passive there so it wasn't boring with all EMGs sounding similar (I didn't say the same :P) and I hear that SD's are meant to pick up picking dynamics really well too...

Good project but i highly suggest you re-consider the pickups.
EMGs and passives require two circuits apparently.
IMO you hsould just get some high output DiMarzio pickups. Ibanez and DiMarzio go together like bread and butter, and i suggest changing the trem, edge IIIs are horrible.
See if an Edge pro fits.
My friend has one of these (but the kind with a Flame Maple top) and its not too bad but the trem is horrid.
#9
i love edge 3 .... great when setup professionally... just get it sorted!

if u replace..sell me the edge lol
#10
I know they do, but I'm quite good with electronics, and I'd really like to get that to work. I really like the look of the FR pro NOT FR original if that will fit? But I will definately consider DiMarzios just i play metal leads and I hear the Kerry King set is really good for that.

so erm can i buy the ibanez bridge? If u get a floyd i will pay £100 odd quid for it
#12
Kerry king set WOULD be good for metal leads BUT it'd leave you un-versatile (despite what people say i wouldnt trust them for true versatility)

And the Edge III might be fine but I doubt you've tried the Edge pro or the ZR?
#13
About the bridge, if I decide I don't like it then I'll see about selling it, but for now I'm going to keep it, I just don't want to unnessecarily buy a new bridge...

What pickups would you recommend then? Just the Kerry King set is just an EMG-81 (bridge) and an EMG-85 (neck) with an optional gain booster....

Yeah Kerry king set isnt too bad but I'd suggest brands such as DiMarzio, Seymour Duncan, Baeknuckle (if you have the cash) Swinesheads are handwound good pickups for liek £20 cheaper than Dimarzios or SDs.

Just listen to some sound clips of their range of pickusp and find some you may like. Some can emulate the heaviness of an active pickup but have all the qualities of a passive one.
#17
I'll take a look at that, thanks.

I just had an idea for the 5-way selector

Neck (gain boost on)\__ EMG-85
Neck (gain boost off)/
Middle - either EMG SC, or other passive SC if i can fit the extra circuitry in
Bridge - (gain boost off)\__EMG-81
Bridge - (gain boost on)/

If I were to have passives like SD's but have a booster like in the KK EMG set, you reckon that'd work? (i'd put in a switch for it)

Your have a basswood body, it will not look very nice stained red...

therefore the translucent black laquer, it'll cover most of it, but you'll see the red through it.

#22
right, it's approaching the easter holidays and i just realised i have no idea how to dismantle my guitar other than unscrewing everthing i see...which i'd guess isn't a good plan, can someone help me by telling me how to do it please just i don't want to break anything.

Start by unscrewing everything. Except for the trem, to remove the trem you just need to take off the cover on the back, and remove the springs. The bridge will lift right out.

the knobs, you pull off of the pots. Then you unscrew the nuts holding the pot in place.

As for the switch, what kind of switch is it? Blade style, or toggle style?

It's a 5-way selector, but the plastic top on it obviously doesn't fit through the slit for it, but it doesn't seem like it's going anywhere, as for the knobs, they don't look like they have anything holding them in place...

You need to pull off the tip on the selector.

Do your knobs have screws on them?

Well at the moment it's sat in the other room, but i'm going to finish stripping it tomorrow, then start on the finish next week, it'll be deep metallic red with translucent black all going well, then clearcoats over that for protection
