I don't know why I get a kick out of this, but I love letting various guitar players I play with try my bass out. I insist they play fingerstyle. Seeing what they do always makes me laugh. One guy just pops the strings as if he was fingerpicking on steriods. Awful. My favourite, though, is this other guitar player; he would put one thumb behind the bass and grab the bass from the side, playing with his index finger downward. He would hit the strings totally perpendicular to the fretboard, and every note he played sounded like a damn car crash. It's great to see; it humbles cocky guitar players. Anyone have any similar stories?

yes my lead guitarist thinks he can pop and slap and he strums the string (slap) lol and wen he goes to pop he pulls the string.

I don't really understand why basses have 24 frets, I mean, I've never seen a bassist playing more than the 12 fret.

Lol, my guitarist always tries to slap and pop, but can never do it so they look like a spaz

The power to feel with others give.

Yeah...

My old bassist did that. He sucked balls. And not the baby size balls... the big ones... you know, the porn star size balls.

He use to play this "marching" theme from "lacquer head", and he thought, because he could play two strings in a slap motion, he was the shit. Dumb ass, haha.

Meh, there's no wrong way to play bass, and our rhythm guitarist often grabs my bass during practice, but he's not particularly good at it. Our drummer's a much better bassist than he is but play exclusively with a pick, playing guitar as his main instrument.

It's always fun to switch things around in a band situation, I'd say.

I know a guitarist who strums chords on the bass. And he doesn't know he's doing anything wrong. I refuse to be in the same room as him when he plays.

Not much, but my brother sometimes plays my bass with either one finger, pick, or popping with his thumb.

Absolutely nothing is wrong with bass chords, I use them all the time in my music. But strumming 4-note chords on the bass is not pretty.

Haha. No one touches my bass without asking first, unless its my crappy Jay Turser P-Bass. My guitarist played it a while ago and he was like "Its so big!" He cant do jack crap on it without a pick. lol.

Oh, yeah and I also remember the time this guitar player started playing the Seinfeld song slap style on my fretless bass that I strung with Rotosound Swing Bass... I almost shit.

Yup, my drummer likes to know how to play EVERY instrument in the band so he understands the music or something.

In this one song we play I play a really fast metal style Bass riff to palm musted guitars. It is really hard even for me to play, concidering I am doing walking basslines at 64th notes I think.

When my drummer tried to play it, it was soo funny! He had all the notes exept the roots all wrong, his bass buzzed alot, and he still felt proud that he could play something I could play. XD

All of our members of our band, plus the new guy who's probly joining, can do all 4 (guitar, bass, drums, vox (tho me not well :P) plus the new guy can do keyboard).

It has been and will continue to be a Real treat to switch instruments every few songs during rehearsal for kicks. Our band has a ton of chemistry, and im glad we got this new guy, cuz me and the drummer already had chemistry with him, and he's a great musician.

Our guitarists reguarly plays my bass. i don't mind, but its normally guitar stuff he plays on it, nothing with a solid groove (just..noise?). same with me on his guitar (i am learning!), i tend to play chuggy palm muted riffs.

You've obviously never seen a bassist sweep - I'd love to be the guy to show you otherwise. Maybe someone can suggest some songs for our friend here with some serious bass sweeping? I unfortunately don't know any.

I always get a kick out of seeing them when they give up, complaining that their fingers hurts too much.

In solo's, i agree 100%.

But he Can, contrary to UG belief, hold a groove when needed . Don't completely abandon him becuz of that style! I wouldnt abandon Claypool for being wierd, Wooten for incessant wanking, or even Metal for its OverStructuredness (not enuff improv Lol)

we have chips on our shoulders because our basses are so heavy and they dig in too much (especially when using girl ass guitar straps!)
