Heard it on the news. I was about to go to my early lesson when it came on the radio. All they said is that there's been a Hydrochloric Acid spill and that students arent allowed to turn up today! I looked on their website but it doesnt say anything about it yet. Sounds fucking weird...

Well it looks like i have a day off... Might go in town or something.

Does anyone else have the day off today?

nope
hydrochloric acid is fun stuff though although not very harmful

what! we used to spill acid all the time, i mean once i managed to synthasise plastic explosive and the army had to be called in to do a controlled explosion.

My old high school had a mercury spill in december. Dropped a couple thermometers.

EDIT: if you know anything about chemistry, this is dangerous.

My friend had to burn some of his clothes. School was shut down for a week.

i wish my school had a cesium spill (even though its a solid and i doubt we have much if any, but dropping a huge chunk in a pond would be nice)

Yeah...

It's not that harmful,

maybe it was just slippery?

HCL isn't very dangerous....

wtf??? yeah, it is, its like pH 2 or something.....that is pretty strong stuff unless it is diluted

Yeah HCl is pretty weak, I think the stuff you use at school has pretty much the same pH value as cola. was it a whole tanker full or something like that?

we spilled mercury once in science, we were just told to walk around it - none of this clothes burning malark!

edit: i'm sure cola has a pH of 1... i'm not sure about that but it's not as strong as you think.

Hydrochloric acid is actually fairly dangerous when concentrated.

it depends what concentration it was. all the stuff at the high school level is like maximum 2 mol/l, but if you get 100% HCl, it can be pretty nasty. also depends how much they spilled.

Really? I accidently smashed a box full of mercury filled thermometers at my old primary school in a storage area, they went all over the floor and on a computer but no one actually cleaned it up as it dried out pretty quickly and the debris was easily picked up by myself.

I remember later that day being worried someone would.. I shit you not..

Of course it's diluted; we're talking schools here.

It's a pretty weak acid, it's corrosive but if you get it on your skin you can just wash it off with soap and water and you'd be fine

edit: Yeah of course it's diluted that's why I don't see the big deal unless your school keeps pure HCL lying around

yes, so do i.... it would be fun though
i saw a (secret you woudnt find it online) video once of a man who stole cesium from a lab he worked at and threw it in a pond... lets say it looked like an atom bomb going off with lots of flying fishys thrown in

How is a little Mercury dangerous? I know it's really poisonous... but who really goes around licking the ground? Or am I missing something?

Correction:

pH of about 2

the concentration is measured in molarity , the strength is measured in the pH ...

therefore they dilute it so the concentration is lower, thus making the molarity lower....the strength (pH) stays the same

pH2 means nothing unless you know the concentration. Schools don't usually have anything higher than 2 or 3M HCl, which is very weak.

We had a mercury spill in one of the chem labs a couple of weeks ago, one of the techs just scooped it up and we continued with our work.

No, acidity is measure on the pH scale.

Molarity is similar to concentration, but is slightly different in one way or another.

Strength is to do with enthalpy change.

As for mercury, in school we could only look at it in a sealed jar.

And as for high concentrations of acids in schools, it is possible that they do have stronger acids, and they use these to make dilute versions of the acids for lessons.

well, technically francium would be even more awesome and destructive, but it's radioactive so no one is getting any legally any time in the near future

Yeah it must be pretty massive for them to close the whole school. They just had it on the news again. Aparently the police and fire brigade are there, in full protective clothing, right now clearning it up and its gonna take hours.

They said its been spilled throughout the school, and got a "green" colour to it??? Sounds like something more than HCl. To those people who were asking, i do know a fair bit about chemistry. Just finished a topic about Acids and bases.

I'm probably gonna call up a few mates and go down there and have a look, it'll probably be chaos! I'll let you all know what its like...

EDIT: Aparently vandals brought it in or something. Its like spread throughout the school quad and in entrances to buildings.

haha that's not a HCL spill that's a chlorine spill now that means someone reacted a lot of HCL to get gas off. Ok that is pretty ****ing serious.

You know molarity and concentration aren't the same thing molarity is the number of moles per 100ml of solution (at least that's the way we do it) and concentration is the percent of something, say ethanol per 100ml of solution, and no the pH does not stay the same when you dilute it

When we drop mercury thermometers at school they don't make a big deal out of it ...
We have to clean it ourselves . Tomorrow in chemistry class we're going to do some experiments with some dangerous stuff like AgNO3, KSCN ( the stuff Hitler used to kill himself), NaOH,...
