Well, I need a new bass. I've got $1000 (more or less) to bust, and I want something good. I already have a good solid amp, so the money will be for a bass.

Go all out. I'll take all suggestions.

I play many styles, specifically neo-classical and ethnic metal, if it helps any.

I'd up that a bit and go for the 4003FL (Fretless).

I think Rics are a little above my price range at the moment.

I'd also like to mention my love for small-scale basses, again, if it helps any.

Fender american jazz bass or a sting ray

I don't really understand why basses have 24 frets, I mean, I've never seen a bassist playing more than the 12 fret.

I think neo-classical sounds better on a fretless, IMO. OK, I see where you are coming from, ethnic metal is the other consideration--yeah, maybe he is better with a Fretted 4003.

You can get a 4003 for about $1300, but of course its not small scale by any accounts.

Neo-classical is a larger consideration than ethnic metal at the moment, actually. The scale should be fine on a Ric...it's just that I've just barely found a way to get 1,000 dollars, so I'm not sure how I can manage 1,300 dollars. It wouldn't be an issue except I'm playing on a shit ESP Ltd. B-55 right now. And it's broken, too.

You could get one of the Fender signature (MM,GL,Urge, etc) models. They get great reviews around here. I'm not sure of exact prices, but I think the Geddy is $800.

I'm a big fan of the Schecter Studio series. I'm not sure how they'd fit in your style of playing, but you can get them fretless, and with the Active EMG's you should be able to get a lot of different sounds.

Are you looking for a 4,5 or 6 string bass? Schecter is a good bet, they are under $1000. Ibanez has got some new basses out this year, new prestige basses. You might want to look into them.

If your looking for a 7, the Conklin 7 groove tool is the way to go. I have played one and its great. The neck is not to big and was pretty easy to adapt to. Ebay has those going all the time, in good condition and for under $1000. New they are about $1300.

Sorry, but what the hell is ethnic metal?

Personally, i wouldnt buy a Ric unless i had another, more versatile, bass to play. If you sound doesnt nee that then sweet.

if i were you i'd buy the best Jazz bass you can afford. You cant go wrong with a Jazz mate

Ahh, Ethnic metal from Texas. Gotcha.

Seriously, it's personal opinion. But if I had a grand to blow right now I'd either be getting a used Stingray 5, or a Fretless Warwick Corvette (Which would still sound fine in metal, besides, gotta be unique or you're going to get nowhere.)

how about a ESP B404? i have the B405 and it is a very versitle instrement. and is very cofterble to play.

i just noticed you said you play on the B-55 right now but you have not mentioned wether you are sticking with 5 string or swiching to 4?

if you dont want an ESP i would subjest an ibanez SR505 or 500 it has a more mellow output but is cumfy to play and still has some good sounds. or an american deluxe fender J
