Hey, I was wonderin'

Suppose you couldn't care less about an exam and just wanted to try something out.

Now in which case will you get more answers right:

a) If you just randomly pick the letters, like (A, B, A, D, B, B, C) etc.

b) If you pick ONE particular letter for ALL answers (B, B, B, B, B, B, B) etc.

You've got, say, 150 questions.

Any ideas?

I was actually wondering whether it was possible to mathematically count the probabilities...

You've got more chance picking A, B, C or D for them all than randomly choosing.

best bet: work out first answer, use that one. there usually is a nice amount of every letter in there (they probably have to have a minimum of each)

you have more chance if you guess randomly because if you choose all one letter, you know that some are wrong (by common sense). actually in theory, if where the answers are placed by the exam board are chosen by random, they both have equal chances.

actually, the chances of getting them all right in a test with 150 questions where you choose the answers by random (using random button on a calculator is really the only fair way to do this) is 1/4 to the power 150, which is... 4.9 x 10 to the -91.

i.e. the best way to do well is to actually revise :-P

If the correct answers would be completely random, then mathematically it wouldn't matter if you picked the same answer every time, it would just be a 25% everytime. However, since the correct amount of A's, B's, C's and D's are not going to be chosen at random (since there aren't going to be alot more correct answers with one letter then with another). Now if the amount of correct answers are going to be divided equally, then you would get about 37 questions right by answering everything the same, but there are to things wrong with this theory: 1) they are not going to be divided that equally, so that if you pick the 'wrong' letter, the amount of correct answers will be far less than 37, and 2) if your teacher sees a form with every question anwsered B he's probably not going to check it. Your best bet is to just guess every answer at random.

By the way if you were to guess evrything, the chance of you getting 75 right is binompdf(150,0.25,75) = 2.772 times 10 to the -11th

It's just an English exam and everyone knows I don't need English cause I have this IELTS crap and a Cambridge diploma. So basically English is loads of fun. I do nothing, but because of bureaucracy I have to actually attend the class. And take the exam...

So I decided to conduct an experiment I might draw some porn pics on the answer sheet instead...

If it's one of those Scantron things, mess with it, and see if you can cheat it at all. And then post your findings on the internet and be a hero.

lol...boring. I thought you meant in written exams- a few years back me and a mate had a competition on (£2 bet; was a lot in those days) as to who could get the lowest mark on a German exam. I started writing in German, then changed to really posh English, before going on to describe how i lived in a cardboard box, that we'd recently converted to a castle and opened as a hotel. Then wrote out the lyrics to "Burn it up" by the Offspring, finally writing that i was bloody hungry and i hope i can leave soon.

Turns out i got more marks than the other guy who just scribbled I lost my £2

I don't need to learn that kind of English! That's the whole point! I know it all and I'm excused from learning it (so I have all my marks already), yet because of the stupid bureaucracy I can't avoid attending the class.

I want Business English, but since I'm a freshman, I can't take it yet.

Ooohhh, a mystery!!! Hell, I can shit all over my paper, cum on it or whatever - and still get my 100%. Great system The other lads are very jealous, though... But since they don't know English AT ALL, I couldn't care less about them.

In picking the same ones you have a 99% chance of not getting all of them right. I would go with random just because of that, and I cant be bothered to work anything out so there.

That works for scantrons and all it does is prevent the mark for the wrong answer being printed next to the answer. your grade still lowers unless the person grades it by hand afterwards.

You fail at probability. Any random selection is of equal probability as any other random selection (assuming that there aren't predetermined patterns the teacher or whomever would've written into the exam). In fact, the number of teachers likely to use all of a single letter just to mess with their students is probably higher than any random selection of the 4^150 possible selections which would occur, given A through D as possible choices and 150 questions.

yes it is mathematically possible

say your random letter is B

if one quarter of the question answers are B you will get the same mark whether you guess or constantly say B

Haha sweet

In detention I had to write an essay, I wrote out the lyrics to Enter Sandman by Metallica. I doubt that anyone ever marked it because I never got asked about it.
