I need help. My computer (Windows XP) is acting weird. I'm trying to open my jump drive folder, and when I click O.k. to open it, the blue bar at the bottom of my computer and all of my icons disappear for a few seconds, then when it comes back up, no folder opens. I've also discovered that any folder (I.E. My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, and My Computer) does the same thing. Can anyone tell me what the hell is wrong with it?

E-I did at one point use Limewire, but I got rid of that the best I could.

What were you doing when the problem first started? Generally speaking, problems don't just appear for no reason. Something must have caused it.

Um... I don't really remember (this has been going on for a while, I just now decided to get help since I'm trying to move files away from this computer.)

The inability to open folders\drives can be caused by numerous things - an error in the registry, viruses, spyware, etc...Most likely the problem is coming from spyware\virus. So, here are some common places to go to get some free tools to help fix your machine up.

First, download and install ad-aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

Second, if you don't already have an anti-virus, try either AVG:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

OR

Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/free_virus_protectio.html

Lastly, download crap cleaner:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Here's what each of these bad boys do:
Ad-aware: gets rid of nasty spyware

AVG\Avast: Anti-virus

Crap Cleaner: gets rid of all the temporary files that windows hoards. Also, it has a registry fix option.

Boot into safe mode (if you don't know how, google it - it's different for different makes and models) and install the above applications. Make sure everything is up to date. Run the anti-virus first, then ad-aware, then crap cleaner (clean up both the temporary files and run the registry fix, in that order).

Hopefully that'll fix you up. If you aren't already doing so, use Firefox. It'll pretty much stop all spyware from getting onto your computer.

Could be a RAM problem, but I doubt it. If it is, you can use:

http://www.download.com/3000-2086-10070530.html

To help better manage your RAM (it'll free up memory from programs that don't release it once closed).

Alright, I'll try this.
Thank you Jewmasta, but it everything comes back to fast to be able to do that. I tried it anyway, and nothing new happened, except that the task bar and icons disappeared again when i hit O.K. to start the new task.
