A bunch of people I know keep saying windows vista sucks. I might be getting a new laptop soon with vista. But what's wrong with it? Why do people say it sucks?

Well, any new OS when it comes out is full of bugs. In a couple of months it should all be fine. Plus, it's really slow on most computers because it uses up lots of RAM.
#4
Cause they're idiots? Maybe just because it's different and some of the programs run in different ways... idk. I think it's pretty sweet.
#5
Well man I have it, and gotta say, its ****ing awesome. I havent had one problem with it at all, and i have had it for about a month now.

Plus everything is sooo pretty

Huh? Why does it say that? Isn't vista better than windows 2000?

Yes but those programs were probably made before vista was publicly known, and i assume the program checks what your OS is, and sees windows Vista and thinks 'wtf is that?' or something like that, and automaticly assumes its not as good as 2000.

Is there any way to fix the bugs?

^Compatibility Mode (same as in XP)

Vista is bloated, memory intensive and has severely un-needed features. its 'show off' ware. the minimum requirements are horrendous.

a linux install could do the same things at less of the cost.

dont know tbh, i haven't used vista myself, could probably find some sort of override thing for it i'd guess. Like windows XP has compatability mode (properties of a .exe --> compatability)

edit: Listen to indiemetal head, he sounds knowledgable on the subject :p

its buggy, bloated, and has servere compatability issues with third party software. Also it has a lot of pain ni the ass DRM crap.

And linux would help with some stuff, but if you plan on doing any audio editing, i would uninstall vista and install XP.

Well, it takes a shit load of memory. I'll wait for updates in both Vista and when more memory is available on computers for a cheap price.

And it won't take a good computer at all.

It's very slow, my dad has it, and he has 4GB of RAM. And it's still uber slow.

And it's practically identical to a MAC, just go buy an apple laptop.

I got a new laptop recently, and the first thing I did was get rid of vista and installed windows 98 SE

Get a Mac. You can install virtual PC on it and do all your PC shit on it and without viruses. I have Limewire and download movies and all these cracks and I have yet to get a virus.

Mac is the new Windows.

i can honestly say i have not had a problem with anything i have installed and tried to run everything works perfectly.

Vista can get annoying with the constant pop up windows and its really tight security but thats the only bad thing about it. Compared to XP it isnt the big leep forward they make it out to be, it looks almost the same but if your getting a new pc you minswell go with the new system

I have said this here many many times...

NEVER EVER install ANY Microsoft product until at least the 2nd service pack!!!.
They always rush whatever product out without adequate testing.
Let the idiots and the "gotta have it now" types test the bugs.
The hardware requirements for Vista are ridiculous.

Home edition:
1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
512 MB of system memory
20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space

Home Premium / Business / Ultimate
1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 GB of system memory
40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space

Granted, alot of people already meet this requirement, but still, its fucking nuts to require a minimum of 512 megs of memory and 20 gigs of drive space.
And even if you meet these minimum spec, Vista is going to run like a paraplegic in a tar pit.

People/companies used to code applications keeping in mind to make it so that it doesn't require tons of memory to run effectively. They cared about optimization and efficient coding.
Microsoft (and most other companies) don't care anymore.

A friend (whose every good with computers and that stuff) told me that in the liscence agreement it says that they can check what's on your computer and delete downloaded stuff without asking you whenever they want.

FUCK THAT.

My point exactly. With Vista, Microsoft basically has full access to your computer and can modify the OS in any way they want without the need for your permission. Rumour has it they want to make it so that you don't own software, rather they store the programs on a server and you "rent" them for a fee over the Internet.

What's wrong with Vista? Oh I don't know...everything? Vista is just the Microsoft response to OSX. The problem is that it's not Unix based, so they can't get away with all the eye candy and still stay relatively memory efficient. Just use XP; it's not like there's anything that only runs on Vista yet.

I heard on the news that Vista is incompatible with a lot of stuff that's pretty SOP on the internet for other operating systems. Besides that, what the hell is wrong with XP, anyway? It works fine.

I've been having a nightmare with Vista today; the problem is drivers.
There are two kinds of driver for Vista; ones that don't exist, and ones that don't work.

SPecifically sound card drivers for me. If you're planning on getting a PC for music, recording, editing etc., DON'T get Vista.

Hopefully they will fix it for me, but looking at the tech support forums I think it's unlikely it will be for a while at least. This same problem has been reported many times and they have done nothing.

It came out only recently so a lot of programs aren\'t fully compatible with Vista yet and thus there are many bugs and incompatibility problems.

However, this is the transitional phase from one operating system to another. I do recommend you get Vista now because you\'ll be left behind in a short while if you buy a new XP computer.

The only real fault in Vista is the dumb security confirmation feature. You to confirm everything like 2-3 times to run anything. Pretty useless if you ask me. Hopefully they will refine this feature.

Also make sure you get at least 2 GB of RAM with any Vista system.

I'm not sure what I did is called, but I installed along with XP on my computer. I can select which one to boot when I startup. I think it's called dual boot or something.

I found it to be faster actually. There were a lot of driver problems though.

While we're on the subject of computers, is Windows XP SP2 64 bit? I use an AMD 64 X2 4200+. That might be the reason why it's slower than Vista for me.
