Thought it was turn power on, leave standby off, 2 minutes later turn standby on -> Rock out.

It's like that for my amp too, Hughes & Kettner though rather than a Marshall. I guess maybe it depends on the brand and how they determine which way round standby mode should be. When gigging i leave much longe than a min or two before playing though, maybe the different valves take longer to get going though :s

ya isn't it power then standby? then to turn off standby then power?

It can be different for different amps and all... It's quite confusing o.O

Mine has a straightfoward switch (1) that goes one click down (standby) which you wait about 1 minute..then you click it down again (on).

Then when you're done, just turn it off. Don't worry about going to stand by and waiting a minute, it doesn't matter.

it says 2 minutes in the manuals but anytime between 1 and 2 minutes would do. to be honest i would just set up and put it on stand by straight away ready for sound check and gig.

Ok simple test to tell if there's something wrong with amp, or an error you're making yourself. Take out any input lead so the amp won't feed back *keep head connected to cab though lol* and turn up master volume and check if it starts to make a noisy hissing sound the louder you get. If it isn't hissing by halfway (even a 50 watt head should hiss at this point! lol* turn control back to 0 and flick the standby switch, slowly increasing master volume again. If neither of them creates a hiss, either it's one awesome amp for reducing noise interference, or you have yourself a problem. If i misunderstood the problems you were having, sorry for a pointless post.

wait...do you turn standby off when playing or do you leave it on?

I go:
standby > wait > on > play

It depends on the amp. Some of them are in standby mode when the standby switch is selected 'on', others are the opposite. It depends on the make/model.
My amp is in standby mode when standby and power are both 'on' and you put standby 'off' when you want to play.

Here's the steps for turning on my JSX, which I would think would be one of the more "universal" ways that alot of brands would be used. Of course, I could be totally wrong, too.

Yea, I usually know my tubes are warmed up, because I always plug the amp in and turn on Standby while I'm setting up for band practice or something, and by the time I get all the leads plugged in and guitar tuned up and such, it's been plenty enough time.

No.

The only thing the guitar does is send a weak signal.
