Hey. I know basic theory, and thats about it.

I was wondering if someone could tell me how to determine what chords to use for the Harmonic Minor scales - does it follow the same I - ii - iii - IV - V - vi - vii pattern as it would for a major scales?

If not, please enlighten me.

Weeelll lets figure things out:

Harmonic minor: 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7 ( C D Eb F G Ab B)

Now, we know that chords are usually built on 3rds. So lets leap frog (skip over a note).

C Eb G. We found out the C. It would be a C minor chord (1 b3 5). Add on the sevenths and everything and do this for each note.

^ to expand on that...

Let's use A harmonic minor for simplicity.

A B C D E F G#

Like bluesrocker said, chords are usually built on thirds.

A C E...A minor
B D F...B diminished
C E G#...C augmented
D F A...D minor
E G# B...E major
F A C...F major
G# B D...G# diminished

Ah, you were supposed to let him do it, that way he could get more out of it. Oh well,
