CAGED is a very helpful tool, and has a couple different uses

basically what CAGED is, and stands for, is the 5 different octave shapes, across all strings, like this:

E-5-----
B------
G------
D-7------
A------
E-5-----
that would be the E of caged, because it's derived from the E chord shape

E------
B------
G-7-----
D-------
A-5-----
E------

that would be the A shape, because its the octave shape that the A chord uses

E-8-----
B------
G-5-----
D-------
A------
E-8-----
that would be the G shape

those are just 3 of em, its very good when youre in a key to know, oh im here, theres a root over here, and here, and here

one exercise my teacher had me play through, was all the octave shapes in G, ascending:

E-3----------------15---15--------------
B-----8--8------------------------------
G-------------12--12-------------------
D-5--5------------------18-------------
A--------10--10----------------------
E-3----------------15---15---------------

notice the chord shapes, it goes, E D C A G E, caged, just in a different order

I've been learning the CAGED system for 2 years now, It's basically a system to develop an enclyclopedia in your head and on the fretboard of where to play the same thing in 5 different places.

So you can catalogue scales, arpeggio's and chords into 5 places on the neck so everything ties together.
