How do you scream like in unholy confessions? Is it just something you have, or can it be learned? And i was also wondering how Avenged Sevenfold does the older stuff now that he cant scream. Maybe I could do it like that...

Depending on which parts of the song you mean, there are various techniques involved. Firstly my definition of the screaming parts are those like that on the words 'I'll try' and the the entire 3rd line of the verse. For these parts it literally is screaming when they recorded it and played it live, but you can get a similar effect at lower volumes by trying to distort your voice in whatever way seems natural...practise and it will come, but try to use your throat and lungs to get power behind it, or it can seriously f*** up your voice. For the growly parts, generally most of the song it's done almost by singing an octave higher than it sounds and just literally growling the words...kinda hard to explain but you will work it out with practise...if you find it hard to grasp, start with less growl-heavy things like Enter Sandman and other Metallica songs that are more commercially-orientated. And for a lot of the higher growled parts, particularly on City of Evil, M. Shadows actually does shout...if you see a live clip of them you will notice on some of the high notes he pulls the mic further away and appears to be straining for the note. This is obviously hard to practise, as it's rare you have the ability to make such a noise apart from at gigs/recording in a sound-proofed room. Also the volume actually helps you reach the notes, it just takes time to control where your voice goes when you scream/shout the words. This appears to be his technique for the more recent stuff, and it shows as City of Evil is a more challenging album to sing on the whole. However one of the hardest A7X songs is actually an oldie, And All Things Will End is a very difficult song to sing properly.
His modern way of singing the old songs is to pitch the notes more like normal singing, rather than screaming them, but he does add a growl...it's just a lot less extreme sounding than the old style.

Lol the zenofscreaming.com link kinda renders what i say as a waste of time, if you buy the book as it will go into much more depth, explain it a lot better and will no doubt be much more accurate and be better technically.

Edit:Oops sorry for double-post

No problem. If you can't find something you're looking for guidance on in a book etc then feel free to PM me and i'll try and help and give advice, but like i say...it's better to learn from the pros that write the books/dvds than from me. Also you could try finding a vocal coach that specialises in metal.

Stuart's guide to singing like Avenged Sevenfold:
1. Take one large size penis.
2. Remove skinny jeans, from one's self.
3. Assume the position.
4. Insert penis into rectum with one swift, flowing movement.
5. Let the pain out.
