its really hard to explain
just listen to the soundclips for a phaser (boss, mxr, EHX) and a flanger (ehx, boss, mxr)
you'll probably hear the difference

basically a phaser has more of a metallic sound (not saying its for metal...)
and a flanger has that deep jet plane woooosh to it (...:cheers

but listening to it should clear it up more

Wow, I just listened to the sound clips on MXR's site and I really like the sound of the flanger over the phaser. Do you think it is a good choice to go with flanger over phaser? And if so, can you recommend me a good and well priced ($70 range) flanger?

the flangers i like the most are
the ehx one (the electric mistress - $135)
the mxr one (about $170)
and the boss one ($120)

depends on what you want
if you want what the blue box does to your sound
get the blue box
and maybe save for the mistress (or a different flanger)

if you want the flanger now
get the mistress

its always better to get what you want in the end in the first place
if you want the mistress and the blue box...
save up
thats the best way IMO

from memory...

flanger is a TYPE of phaser. the signal is disrupted, but not like a usual phaser. Best way to explain it is it it like a jet plane taking off. Because i'm listening to it, Children of bodom-Mask of sanity, just after the keys intro, a whoosh comes in. Thats flanger

theres a visual of a phaser on here somewhere.....basically it sweeps in and sweeps out. You can adjuist the speed on most phasers, and some have many options you can tweek to get that nice smooth phaser sound

you get a real-life flanger when you move away from a small speaker - its because the speaker is so small that its frequencies have to go so far, thus the sound changes depending on how far away you are away from it - creating the flanger effect. OR the sound is large amounts of air being moved so ramdomly - thus a jet engine or an air conditioner. move your head back and forwards in front of an air conditioner and you will get the flanger effect. the phaser i have no idea lol
