Go buy one of those "100 acoustic songbooks" or whatnot. They're full of great ones.

A good one I always find is "Whats Up" by 4 Non Blondes

try asking the kids what bands they like before you decide - unless it's a band they don't like.
I personally wouldn't be fussed as long as I had scope for progress, but some peopel might get arsey.

Blink 182/Green Day songs are pretty easy to pick up and will probably give your students a bit of a confidence boost if they are playing songs they can recognise

Yngwie Malmsteen - Far Beyond The Sun
Dave Mustain has wrote some of the most amazing solos...
That he can't actually play!

American Pie. Everyone knows that.
The will to neither strive nor cry,
The power to feel with others give.
Calm, calm me more; nor let me die
Before I have begun to live.

-Matthew Arnold

Arguments are to be avoided; they are always vulgar and often convincing.

I would use some songs of the rock top 100 or something... not everybody listens to the same bands... but there are good songs that (almost) everybody loves..
I think Nirvana - Come as you are is kinda easy to learn
