just cos a band is popular, it doesnt mean they're sell outs. Its called talent. The sell outs are the ones that have extortionale ticket prices, i.e. coldplay, u2 etc.

Dime Bag & Zack Wylde. *Everybody flames me*

I say that b/c they, by far, have their names on the most crap. Wahs, guitars, shirts, videos, pedals, amps, for god sakes... shoes. If that's not a sellout, I don't know what is.

selling out is essentially compromising your music to fit into a mainstream sound in order to make lots of money. A good example of selling out is Metallica. They call it evolving as a band, I call it selling out. Bands like Green Day are not sellouts, they started off making crappy music and continue doing it to this day, they compromised nothing.

Bands sellout when "fans" feel too many people like them due to popularity and call them sell outs but claim to love them because they want to look like real fans, or they say it because the bands they love aren't as big and want to look superior.

no,but wtf was he doing on One tree Hill?

Wow, he made an appearance on a TV show, that clearly means he changed the style of his music intentionally to make more money

Is Corpsegrinder a sellout?

The term 'sell-out' is banded around so much these days, hardly anyone seems to even know what it means any more...

Personally I think someone has sold-out if they undermime their musical integrety. If you end up producing music because you know it will sell rather than because it's what you want to make then you have sold-out.

Personally I don't really see the big deal. If Britney Spears came alone and asked me if I would play guitar on her next record/tour I'd do it in an instant. You can live in this little dream world of musical integrety when your a teenager but as soon as you get a glimpse of the music industry you'll sell your soul for anything.

Have you ever heard anything by Green Day before Dookie? Probably not. I wouldn't make generalizations. Go out and get a copy of 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, you'll thank me later.

Metallica and Anti-Flag are two big sellout bands. Especially Anti-Flag, because their record sales support everything that they claim to be against.

Rory Gallagher is popular and gaining popularity and her is neither a sell out or untalented.

But, I do get what you are saying. Virtually all big bands these days sold out alot. I hate MTV. They ruined popular music.

all these damn mallcore bands that pop up out of nowhere. they sell out the moment they start. they have a certain look and sound so they'll be noticed by labels.

Look I hate Greenday now and believe their music is utterly horrible but it definitely hasn't always been that way. Dookie and all prior albums were not bad at all. Greenday was never an incredibly talented band but they had good energy and a somewhat original sound back then. The majority of people here probably used to like them (if they were even alive in Greendays earlier years) everybof is just bashing them for their current shitty music, the shit they're playing now is nothing like what they used to play. Dammit I just defended Greenday
I got in everyone's hostile little face. Yes, these are bruises from fighting. Yes, I'm comfortable with that. I am enlightened.

I agree with this guy 100%.

Same with all these new bands like Panic at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, and any emo/scene/hardcore/indie bands.

I just thought about it recently and I shouldn't care anymore because it's a fad and it will all blow over.

The thing is that Metallica did change their style, and I can't see how it's doing them any good ,if no one likes the newer albums. As for the shit Lars gets for suing Napster, he was right. Him wanting to keep the rights to his own music is by no means selling out.

EDIT: Selling out is a term used by people that feel that their favorite band got too big, and they can't be the only one who knows about them, and by people that dislike a certain band.
<Omri> I love trannys too..
#31
we have to remember that everyone has different music tastes. just because you dont like their style, or think they're crap, that doesnt mean they're sellouts.
may i remind you that bands such as blink 182 and green day pretty much created the modern pop-punk genre, which is hugely popular around the world. the way i see it is most (sorry about generalising) UGers are metalheads, and have little or no respect for other peoples tastes.
even if you do think some bands suck, they still have the talent to wrtie catchy songs that make them popular.
#32
Let the bands do what the **** they want. If you are so pissed of just start your own band and doesn't sell-out.

When are these threads going to end?

As far as I'm concerned Pete Wentz kicks all of your asses because at least he goes out and makes the music he loves making instead of sitting on the internet bashing kids with dreams. It seems I've had to make this post far too many times in the two years I've been here and it's ridiculous.

You don't like the music, so why are you keeping surveillance on their lives? No one said you had to buy the album. If it comes on TV, change the channel. If your music is so much fucking better, go get a record deal and quit your motherfucking bitching already.

Until you can one-up them, shut your fucking mouth and go practice your scales.

Right. Cuz you can all go inside everyones heads and find out that the whole reason they changed their style was for money. Is this just a plot from all you non-conforming conformists? Any popular band needs to be hated so you don't seem similar to anyone else?
Go get your shovel.

Yeah, hardcore sure is a sellout genre and is just a fad. Douche.

Every successful musicians has to sellout to some degree at some point. You just can't be rad all the time in the music industry and make money. I've been organizing locals shows and doing a music business course and some of the shit things about music start to make sense now.

Except rap............

Finch's Say Hello To Sunshine Album was a sell out IMO, man that album really sucked compared to What it is to Burn...
