They are prog, so they belong here.

Could anyone recommend me a good album to start with? I have listened to the songs they have on myspace, and I was thinking of getting "The Odyssey".

Honestly I think at least around here and with most peopel I know they are better known than say, Vai.

and personally I think they are overrated.
But not bad at all.

IMO better. The Divine Tragdey is my favourite album.

Too sterile overal sound imo. Sounds more like composing music for films then a metal/prog band.

i would say underrated... they are NOT popular

SX is one of my fav bands

check out V, Divine Wings and Twilight....

Odyssey is good but no where near these 3 albums imo
#13
Divine Wings is honestly their best I'd say. But they aren't anywhere as good as dream theater.

Well, they have their differences but in a contest of who makes 'better' music i'd say its dream theater. Where as SX has some great ones, and alot of shit ones...

some of their songs are pretty cheesey, but i like a lot of their stuff. i'm a big DT fan so IMO DT are better. i really do love the odyssey. it's definitely better than some DT albums.

Symphony X are amazing IMO, they just edge DT for me.

The Divine Wings of Tragedy had so many great songs, Sea of Lies in particular.

Am I the only one who thinks The Odyssey is their best album?

I think SX and DT are very different in what they do, so I don't see the point in comparing them really.

I prefer SX though, especially after DT's last two albums; I didn't like those one bit. However, I'm curious about both of their new albums.

I have yet to hear anything by them. What album do you guys think I should get first?

The Divine Wings of Tragedy is a good start. But I was turned on to Symphony X when I first listened to V-The New Mythology Suite.

Consistent if anything. Since Divine Wings, they have been going uphill.

I mean with Dream Theater, every song on an album is classic, but Symphony X has a little bit of filler, not much, but still

My favorite is probably Twilight in Olympus. I think the singer has a great voice. I also love Romeo's guitar work. His rhythm work is awesome. And of course his soloing is nice as well.

Except for Octavarium. Everything was filler on that except for the title track.

But regarding Symphony X, I love V: The New Mythology Suite and i shall be getting The Divine Wings of Tragedy soon.

Hit this once or twice, and you'll be twice as nice.

The Odyssey is one of the few really long songs (24 min) that I can listen to all the way through and every bit is great.

I've only heard the Oddyssey but after reading this thread it makes me horny to go to Lincoln and see if they have any SX cd's in the whole town (I doubt it). I like wintersun and some dreamtheatre, so I assume I should like SX's other stuff.

I really liked Octavarium, the whole album. but maybe its because that was my first DT album (I had Petruccis solo album already though) I have all of them now except Seasons, FIF, and WDADU
but back on topic, I take back what i said about SX being inconsistent. I'm totally into them now

Dream Theater explore's Boundaries, where symphony x Composes really well on classical based progressions, theory, sounds; mixed with mythology.

Though as a band DT is better. And composition is purely opinion, although you can't disagree with what i said above.

I like them both for different reasons. They are really in separate genres. DT is more progressive and I feel a little more diverse, whereas Symphony seams to be more power metal/fantasy rock.

I don't think it is really possible to compare the two.
#38
They're two of the biggest names in prog metal though, so they're gonna get compared alot

Yeah, I like Ensiferum and I don't mind "through the fire and flames" by Dragonforce (depending on what mood I'm in) so nothing's to cheesy 4 me

They are one of my favourite bands...siply amazing
Allen's voice is superb and of course MJR is one of the top (if not the top) guitarists around (especially his skip-tapping is UNBELIEVABLE!)
Anyway IMO the best album to start is Divine Wings.
Oh, and i can't understand why they compare them with DT, they may be progressive too but totally different (Symphony X has more classical elements into their songs)
