i know someone's going to say "nu metal" is gay... it's coming.

in my opinion, nu metal is like what i would call alternative metal. like, hard rock basically. thats what i think.

*edit* pretty sure it has nothing to do with solos...

Nu metal is shit. nuff said.

Actually, nu metal comes from hard alternative bands such as rage against the machine and faith no more and is kinda stodgy compared to metal. You wouldn't put it with Metallica or Slayer in other words.

SOHedit: Ok then, it's gay :P

Nu-Metal usually has chronically detuned guitars, more emphasis on bass, less emphasis on instrumental technicality, possibly hip-hop or rap-style lyrics, possibly the use of sampling/a turn table and much more emphasis on the vocals in general, as opposed to the instrumentals.

Also, they are girly-men.

I think it is the guitar work that separates nu metal from real metal. Nu metal has realy simple riffs were as metals got intracite riffs that require talent.

I'll give a reasonable answer.

Nu Metal

= Hip Hop inspired vocals (Rap
= Simple, repeating riffs.
= Hip hop influenced drum beats
= gay djs (sorry i couldn't handle being serious for a full answer)

And so forth.

i always figured nu-metal was current bands with metal/harcore influences that approach songwriting in a "radio-edit" pop style format

Basically, it's hard rock w/ more distortion, hip-hop influenced beats, occasionally screamed vocals, and lyrics about emotional pain and suffering (although different from your typical emo stuff).
