Sorry if this seems like a dumbass question, but I've been trying to get out of using the word shred to describe a genre, and I was wondering if you could call Satriani prog. He uses odd time signatures and modes and things like that, but his songs are normally pretty average length and he has alot of straightahead stuff (Surfing, House Full of Bullets, Super Colossal ect.)

So next time I go in I'm gonna ask for a thong

Satch calls it Experimental Rock..

I could see how you would think he is prog. Some of his songs have that edge, but not much. I'd call it Experimental Rock like xtopher_aaron said.

Modes don't make you prog though, if they did, we'd all be prog.
I wouldn't call it prog as much as just experimental.

I meant that he uses modes not typical to rock

What does it matter; His music is there and stays how it is even if you call it broom stickdancing or something.

This is going back. Shred is the word what defines an own style/approach/sound.

yea, id go with Experimental or Instrumental rock...

or one could just say "It's Satriani".....

Is progressive a new buzz word?

Plain instrumental rock. If you want to classify beyond that, it's his own unique style of instrumental rock called "Joe Satriani".

Satch Boogie Music.
Known.
Some.
Call.
Is.
Air.
Am?

Incoherent - yes.
Without meaning - I'm afraid not.

"Known some call is air am."
Which is to say-

"I am not what I used to be"
