He said in an interview that he uses a no name distortion pedal he got from a pawn shop a while back, that's probably where it's at.

For the longest of time Robin who was in the band from the Downward Spiral tours, thru the Fragility tour used Les Pauls. Trent also used Les Pauls druing this time. Now-a-days Trent has been using a Dean EVO for most of his live guitar parts. Arron North (new guitarist) uses mainly Fenders.

To get the tone, thats tough to nail due to the all around soundscape that Trent employes in his music. The broken album is just basic metal distortion, atleast thats what I use to mimic the tone, and it also works well with a lot of the guitar part on Downward. The Fragile album is another story, its more of a mellow distortion. Still heavy but just not overpowering like in Last or Mr. Self Destruct.

With Teeth I really havent play that much around with yet, mostly due to the extensive NIN catalog that is actully out there. My next two days off I'll crunch that album out see if I can find some tones that match up.

Another thing to remember with NIN, is they filter a lot of parts that you can not even figure out what the hell it actully is. For example, the intro part of Big Man With A Gun, is actully the noise of a porn star cumming, and thusly shooting her girl juice across the room. You can thank Tommy Lee on that one, which is why he is credited in that song for the MeatBox.

That last part sounds like a creative idea

ZOMG i always wondered what that sound was

but live, Arron likes to add vintage high output pickups in guitars to give him the most abstrat sound you can imagine. and he likes to use vintage hagstroms as well, you can see it in "the hand that feeds" video.

Trent Reznor uses a Line 6 Vetta II live IIRC, and a Dean Evo Noir guitar. It's good to remember that NIN uses a large amount of multitracking on his albums, has an effects depot that's huge and sophisticated recording programs among other things. Having just the guitar isn't going to help you at all.

Adam North who makes a majority of thier sounds uses mostly vintage hagstrom guitars, some vintage fenders, and a les paul.
