I looked up the pedal that Kurt Cobain used, so I decided to buy it. It's really cheap on ebay, but I want to know if it's any good for music other than Nirvana, so is it?

Umm.. actually I'm pretty sure most musicians who have used these have modded there DS-1's.
It was and is my first distortion pedal, pretty good for the price and can get versatile. But it could definately use some work. SO don't expect much when the tone knobs above 9 o clock it get really harsh.
Gets the job done but i'd consider other stuff as well.

I have the Boss Super Overdrive OD-1, much more resourceful. I also have a DOD Overdrive Preamp/250 Reissue which blows all out of the water IMO.

Buy it and mod it to Keeley specs. I've almost finished doing it, and it sounds AMAZING!

Its one of the best pedals you can buy for around $40. If all you need is a good sounding, simple distortion pedal the DS-1 is the guy.

And dont mod it. If youre buying a pedal like that its not worth it. If you want a pedal to sound different...you should buy a different pedal. If you want a pedal to sound better...buy a better pedal.
#8
Or, you could buy a mediocre sounding pedal for cheap, mod it with $10 worth of parts and have an amazing pedal for less than the cost of a new one! Seriously, it's not worth spending all your money on something that still may not suit your sound, when you can customise something to fit your sound AND learn a lot in the process.

Ds-1 is terrible for classic rock. I had it, but i returned it for an SD-1 which for classic rock is much better. The DS-1 is just an all around okay pedal, very good for the price. It's not great at anything but it's good or decent at most. It's much better if you mod it.

Cheap amps are "that bad". They suck up your tone like cocaine at Kate Moss' party.

my boss ds-1 is modded with the Keeley mods i love it now! it sucked b4 but i bought it cause it was cheap (bad mistake).

Get the DS-1. I like mine stock, and will probably keep it stock.

But i'd get another one and mod the crap outta it. I'm sorry....i like keeping my original gear in tact.

no.

its not for classic rock, that may be what i use it for, but its definatly not built for it.

I play progressive death metal with one they are great for any style really

Did you mod yours, or is it stock? If you did mod it, what mods did you use?
#16
It's good for the price. But, if you have some extra cash, I'd look into a higher quality pedal. Mine served me well for a few years, but the drive channel on my Hot Rod Deluxe destroys it.

Definitely a good pedal to get first. Huge amount of versatility, though it does lack in a couple areas. I hear the Keely mod is nice too though.

I don't know why arlabester uses it for classic rock but hes right

It's definatly not the right pedal for it.

well
its an distortion pedal
and you know there arent any rules that you cant use that pedal for this type of music....

i think if you know how to use a pedal you can use it for anything

Or you could just get a wah. ^^

I manage to use my DS-1 for classic rock, but there's alot of EQing involved. I'll agree with Arlabaster, it's not made for that.

Of course being a distortion pedal you can use it in a lot of music.

I hear good stuff about the Digitech Bad Monkey and there around the same price. Never tried one but I read good stuff about it on here.

and thats what pretty much everybody should do

doesnt matter if a pedal is "built" for a specific genre
if you like the sound, you can use it for anything you want

I've heard and seen a Tubescreamer overdrive an amp to play the solos in trivium songs.

And i've seen a reagae guitarist use a MT-2....go figure.
