It's funny that no one really knows that the entire Led Zeppelin album and the solo from Stairway To Heaven was recorded on a late-50's Telecaster. His tone on the first album is godlike. I love it.

Yeah.

The Tele doesn't get enough credit for most of Zep's albums

I don't like the fact that Esquires don't have a neck pickup. A neck pickup on a Tele sounds so good

A Telecaster is really an Esquire with a neck pickup, really, but I could be wrong. Maybe there's some wiring differences inside or something?

i almost made the stuipidist mistake of my life. I was looking for a lower tone so i decided to get a gibson sg and sell my Highway 1 in midnight wine. I got the Gibson SG, but the tele wouldn't sell. So the SG became my 16th birthday present (mum: fine but the only thing u get for ur 16th birthday is a cake and a kiss Me: idc, thats cool) So now i have both. And im glad i didnt sell the tele. The tone is amazing and the neck is like nothing else, Ive also tricked out the pickguard with drawings, some double sided tape for picks, and a slide holder on the strap invented by me. It looks pretty bitchin and sounds even better. I would say my favorite tele player is Joe Strummer ( i know that im like one of millions of people thatht think that). Oh yea great thread by the way

Esquire switching is different, the 3-way selector works for three different modes, can't exactly remember what they do, but for the rest i think an Esquire is just a Tele without the neck pickup

EDIT:

It's the other way around: Tele is Esquire with added neck pickup, Esquire was first ^^
About the switching:

"Although the Esquire had only a single pickup, it retained the three-way switch of the two-pickup guitars. This switch modified the tone of the pickup by making it bassier in the forward position, while enabling use of the tone control knob in the middle position. With the switch in the rear position, these tone controls were bypassed entirely for a 'hotter' lead ton"

I have a black MIM Tele, its my only electric and, needles to say, its my baby although:
1. I wish I got it in sunburst because black is dull.
2. Prefer the shape to the Strat with the groove in it 'cause Teles really hurt the ribs sometimes.
3. Want a trem' badly!

Seriously, how cool is that!

Longtime lurker, jsut wanna say best guitar site on the web, so informative, this place has helped me understand theory better than anywhere or one has before.

I am | | this close to buying a Highway 1 and I can get a decent deal on it. I just cannot decide whether or not to spend the money on new recording stuff. I love the thing though, the neck feels so right, like a tight...yea. I am probably going to pick it up in the next week or so as soon as this check clears. Don't really have any questions, just tell me how much you love yours so it makes me wanna shell out the $650 here soon.

Favorite Tele Player: Brent Mason? Hard to choose...

I had to replace some of the wires with longer ones, so I could turn the the switch the right way, and have the tone knob in the middle instead. If you are willing to have the switch the wrong way around, and the volume in the middle, it's very easy, and requires no soldering.

i flipped mine the other day and its amazing!
i just turned the pickup switcher and left the vol and tone the same
so now it goes tone volume switcher. no soldering, just a phillips head screwdriver

Why does everyone flip their control plates around? Is it so you dont switch pickup when you play?

I think it's to get the volume knob closer.. Probablt just to be different aswell.

My wires are too short so I can't so it. And I just noticed yesterday that my control plate leaves a hole on the edge where it doesn't fit properly. Damn Squiers. I've had it for a year and never noticed though.

Cheat technique for easier volume swells, usually.

Well, although the Esquire LOOKS similar to the Tele, it's alot different. In the bridge position is the twangiest, sparkliest sound you'll ever hear. It's like a Tele on steroids. The middle position is similar to the Tele's middle, and the neck has no tone control and is very, VERY bassy. The problem with this type of switching is a sudden decrease in vloume while switching to something like the neck.

Do they still make Esquires? I'm interested to go play with one now and see what it's like.

Yeah, apart from the various custom shoped '59 reissues, they do have a mexican classic '50s and a Seymour Duncan signature.

I'm diggin' Those 70's custom Teles... the ones with the Strat headstock...

Does anyone own one? If so, how are they?

Went to a small gig yesterday, the guitarist was using a CAR Classic 60s Tele.

It sounded SO SO nice through his Mark IV. It was also ridiculously hawt looking. It sounds and looks so so natural, on clean and with gain, so much fatter than a Strat in the bridge but with a lot more treble too, Teles really couldn't be a better piece of design.
The Laney Thread are big and clever. No exceptions.

I suppose you could rout it out for a toaster pickup but sorry, no 12-string Teles.

Well I hope you're happy everyone, after looking at all these fine instruments I've decided I need money. To do that I need a job, and today I'm going to go out and seriously look for one. I knew I shouldn't have bothered getting up early this morning (I actually got up while there was still frost on the ground, that is so not me). I'm just drinking some strong coffee while I wait for my housemate to finish up in the bathroom, then it's shower, shave, clean shirt and off down the job centre.

You guys have fucked my entire day now you know that? I was going to play some accoustic blues, tinker with my car (doesn't go cos I have no money for insurance or registration) play some computer games, read a book, go out about lunchtime to get my dole money, go to burger king, watch traffic go past for a bit, come home, play some more guitar then watch the simpsons.

Being on the Dole rocks damnit, but you all had to go posting pictures of your pretty guitars and now I'm tempted over to the employed side. If only I managed a band that actually made money I wouldn't need a job.

So it's a Tele-styled guitar? I don't know too much about Schecters.

^Eh, not big on the humbuckers. It just seems that a Tele would be inappropriate for metal.

Well I play metal on my Squier often so I figured a HH Mahogany Tele would be even better. I just like the guitar in general anyway, and I got it pretty cheap so I'm happy.

Just gotta sell my Epi Black Beauty to pay for it now >.<
