I have a feeling that he is really saying that he wants to join the band, but may think he will be an anchor to the band or not good enough. To that I would say your friend wouldn't have asked you unless he believed in you. The most important thing you can do right now while you are young is play with as many different people as possible.
I was once heavily prominent on these forums from 2004-2007, let's see how long I can stay now that I'm back.

Do it up, man. If you're uncomfortable with your playing ability then you should jam at every opportunity. It's a lot easier to do if you're just jamming with another bandmember when you're hanging out. That's what I do, anyway.
