ok, im a noob guitarist, and i really want to make some progress during the summer. i know some basic chords, but thats about it. the only song i can play moderately well is good riddance by green day. i want to start learning scales now, but i have absolutely no idea where to start. any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

good place to start is the minor pentatonic scale, to get you started on improvising. the major and minor scales are also pretty essential.

Yup, that's the first thing to do - if you don't know the notes then scales are useless.
