In my opinion you'll find the most straightforward and thorough approach to the essentials of music theory in the late Paul O. Harder's trilogy...

1. Basic Materials in Music Theory: A Programmed Course
2. Harmonic Materials in Tonal Music: A Programmed Course - Part 1
3. Harmonic Materials in Tonal Music: A Programmed Course - Part 2

These books are now out of print, I think, but they're worth whatever effort and money you have to spend to get them. They are beyond outstanding.
