Help me out with this. Whats the difference? I know that active pickups use batteries and that but what about the sound? Can you hear any difference? The same Q about PA-systems, active and passive. How do they work and all that? Just wanna know.

Yeah, you can definitely hear a difference. Active pickups have really quite low outputs, but are boosted by the battery and give a really high output, used quite alot by metal bands.

Passives can range from really mellow to almost as agressive as most active's and are generally considered to respond more to playing nuances compared to active's.

I personally think active's can sound a bit sterile.
