certain differences, such as what wood, what strings, pickups, amp,...

its all a matter of personal preference. Tone is subjective...what sounds pleasing to the ear for someone may sound like complete and utter **** to another...

bass or treble, basicly! some people like a more bass tone and others like a scratchy treble tone and others like it somewhere in between. its just the sound u want your guitar to make really.

I wount comment on the previous posts.

Tone is how good a given piece of equipment sounds. An example:

1. A wal-mart strat that has a tinny and empty sound

vs

2. A gibson Les Paul Supreme, which has a cool, soothing sound that you like.

The 2nd one has better tone. Easy as that.

Hi,
I have been pickin' up some Arabic radio signal things. Every time I turn up my Amp, this crazy Imam starts messing up my chords.

OK, I'm going to completely ignore that...

Tone is so subjective. What sounds good to you is bad to others. The best way to get an ear for tone is to hear all sorts of pickups, amps and guitars, mix and match, listen, play and listen some more!

Totally.

Some people would look at say, David Gilmore's smooth sound as a good tone. Then others would look at the ragged, raw sound of Jack White when playing with The Raconteurs as good tone. Totally subjective.

Although some things do just sound shiiiiite.

It's still subjective. Someone might like the tone from a shitty guitar more than a Gibson.
