They have 1 firewire and 4 usb.

Judging by the specs on the apple web page, these things are good enough for recording.

Let's just say the best mac mini is identical to the cheapest iMac. Still, the cheapest iMac is a powerful machine. As long as you aren't planning on tracking 64+ instruments at once you should be ok.

my bro (he works at best buy) can get me a cheap refurbished Mac Mini for about 1/2 off and that doesnt even include his discount. Since im only using this computer for recording, is it worth it? I plan on getting 2 GB of ram and then getting an external harddrive

The 2 GB of ram will help for sure. Definitely worth it.

I love Macs

Just an idea, you could build a mobile recording rig by rackmounting the MacMini, getting some processors, mountable mixer, etc and then just attach a portable monitor to it. You could make a few dollars by charging local high school bands a flat fee for recording a performance of theirs.

Should be good enough for whatever you are doing. Are you getting the one with a Core Solo Processor or Core Duo? I would HIGHLY recommend getting the Core Duo over the Solo.

the second one is slightly faster.

i currently use a stock mini for recording, and it works fine for it running FL, kristal, and bittorrent in the background just fine, with minimal latency.

PC Desktop + Linux > Mac any day.

HP Pavilion though... Nah, go for the Mac.

can you explain this? Im getting so confused, i mean 50% of people say PCs have much more power and are better while 50% say Mac all the way. I just want a computer that will not lag when I record and have a lot of CPU space

Most PC users run Windows. Hence PCs get a bad reputation, since the Mac operating system is a little more efficient (and looks cooler) than Windows.

Hey. Instead of making a new thread I will use this thread. I am planning on getting one of these mac minis, and use it through a Samsung flatscreen monitor. All I care about is having internet and recording programs. I am also planning on buying a Logitech webcam so I can finally get some of my videos up on Youtube. Will this setup work/is it good?
