Hey UG,

I need some advice. Wondering if some of you composers would offer any good advice for building upon riffs with a good structure. I am not talking about randomly hitting different notes, or just jumping in with some scale pattern to create a song.

I would like to know when you create a riff or a catchy tune, what is your way of adding to it, whether it be the chorus or the bridge.

Like this song idea I have, I want it based on the D minor scale. So here it goes:

For an Intro:

I use the progression 1, 4, and 5. Or D, G, A from the D minor scale.

So my question is this. If I want to keep it in the D minor scale, and make it all rock based. Would I just keep using the 1, 4 and 5 progression. Now I know you just play what sounds right. But I am talking about the theory behind it? For an easier way. Not just wanking around on the guitar. Any good composing advice, for say a bridge, chorus, interlude, etc.

Hope I make sense.
