My friend used to play a crate amp and it sounded f*cking amazing. Is it just him or am I going to get ZERO luck out of these? They're cheaper than a marshall so I'd rather get one if they're halfway decent. Damage report, please.

I figured it out.

Well...Dethklok uses them so they can't be too bad.

^ BLASPHEMY!!! Haha, they use Kranks. Crates are ok amps. They have some low-end solid state stuff that I would stay away from, but the Blue Voodoo series is supposed to be quite good.

I think you are thinking of that 20 foot amp with like 4 4X12 cabs that was modeled after the Blue Voodoo

It was a show/gimmick amp. It was 600w and has 12x16 speakers.

Haha. My amp is rated at 65w, and one time I played a show with this kid who had a 65w Crate SS combo. His was dimed on the lead channel, mine was at 2 and properly EQ'd, and we were both level with the drums.

12x16 inch speakers is not 192 inches of speaker. it's 201 inches x 12, which is 2412 inches, not to mention the fact that since the speaker in in a cone, it cover a wider area if it was flattened out.

16x12 inch speakers would cover 1809.5 sq inches, not counting the extra area I didn't actor for a cone.

I forget the name of it, prob the blue voodoo but I played until the provincial finals of this battle of the bandsish type of thing and they supplied the amp which was the crate halfstack of it which was ****in amazing I loved it, but yeah their cheap SS combo amps are quite crappy man, if you dont want tube but want a nice amp for your house go for a roland cube or something similar, i've got a roland cube 20x and its very nice for my room, it even has this power squeezer button that is sort of like an attenuator(lowers wattage of an amp) and yeah good stuff but stay away from cheap crates cause you may not hear the difference right now but once your more experienced you will regret buying it

Blue Voodoo's and Palomino's are nice amps and a great deal considering the price. The BV sounds alot like a Marshall DSL and the Palomino's are lower-gain, more along Fender lines and good for blue's or classic rock. Personally I wouldn't touch one of their SS amps with a ten foot pole.

If you can find one, they also made a great high-gain tube amp in the early 90's called a Stealth. They're usually cheap on Ebay and have excellent 80's-metal tone. Best amp Crate ever made IMO.

I've never heard of a Black Voodoo. I've seen some BV's in both red and black tolex covering before but they're the exact same amp as the BV.

Crate amps are good!

Sure, alot of them are Solid state. But thats just about the feel! I tried a VTX 200 in trondheim. It Was LOUD AND ****ING AWESOME.

However. I think crate is overpriced! And crate amps are often just fit for a certain style.

I have a crate 2x12 SS with 120W, I think its a XT120 (Fogrot the name ). Its a decent amp, not the greatest tone, but I got a good deal on it and its loud enough to jam with and you don't have to dime the thing. My biggest complaint is how quickly the volume jumps on it, the difference between 1 (almost no sound) and 2-3 (to loud to use in a small room) is huge.
#25
Try the FW65 112 (aka Flexwave 65). I have it, and it's pretty decent for a solid state amp. However the V series with tubes in them are most likely better.

The v8 is an awesome practice amp; I regularly run master maxed out when playing clean because of its low power and it sounds great. Not quite as heavy as I would like, but hey, $280; who was I to complain?
#32
My friend has a Crate half stack.
Both he and I think that it has way too much bass. He's tried every setting, even turning the bass all the way down. But it basically sounds like a bass guitar.
He uses a Gibson Goth Les Paul, which is a great guitar, but the amp has way too much bass.

I'd reccomend something else.

I used to use one until I got the B-52 and now I have a JCM 900 until my B-52 gets back from the shop and I prefer my Crate over the JCM 900. I like the Crate over the 900 because the 900 has wicked ****ty distortion and sounds like a little girl screeching opposed to the Crate which is just...death metal.

glx65 possibly? i actually dont like the tone of the glx65 and anything you put into its effects loop gets distorted, so i would actually say stay away from crate amps.
