my main genres are blues, classic rock, indie, alternative, rock, jazz, britpop and some santana sounds.

what guitar would suit me best ? i really need a fat eric clapton sound in his cream days .
or would a LP (or an ES 335) suit me better for all of these genres ?

thanks

This may not get anywhere, as the three first post are all the guitars your trying to decide over. I'd go with a Les Paul, they do it all.

i dont like tele's. depends what kinda tone your going for. strats are usually more trebely, lp's have more a warm tone. i love my LP, it is quite versatile.

I would go for a Fat Strat or a Tele with a bucker.

can you put a humbucker in a tele ?!? i thought there wasn't enough room...
anyway, why would you wanna do that ?

i play a american deluxe ash strat and i couldn't be happier but a '72 custom tele would suit u better.

TS: All those guitars will do the styles of music you want to play well. It's all down to what YOU personally prefer, because that's what everyone here is doing.. Telling you what THEY PREFER.. Not what is better. There is no definitive 'better' guitar, only what you like best.

Go to a shop and try all 3 and see which one you like best.

You obviously need/want and must get all 4 ... get the one you like best first, then work through your "needs".

What you need to do is go to every shop, and play every les paul, strat, tele they have.
That should keep you occupied for summer.

Les Pauls have a warm tone and sound a little lower, Teles are high and twangy and Strats are in between. Les Pauls are my fave, but you should try them all out first.

what do you mean by 'lower' ? you mean a bit heavier in sound ?
#28
Les pauls have a fuller, warmer sound because of they have humbuckers instead of single coils. I think they sound better for that classic rock crunch than the tele or strat. I am a les paul man so that is what I would suggest, but you really have to decide for yourself. If you said that you ONLY want to get a crunchy led zeppellin tone, I could say definetly get the les paul, but the range of music that you said you want to play is so broad that any of these guitars would suit you. You really have to try them all out and decide which you like better.

Les Paul, they can be pretty darn versatile.
SGs can go in the harder side, but still can do blues etc
Strat might be weaker on the heavier side
and Teles are just..dunn

Strat all the way! Get the HSS model if you want a good tone for playing Cream tunes. He also has a sig DigiTech pedal with those tones on it...
#31
get a strat. i bought a '72 tele thinline, and the tone was kind of flat and boring. it was good, but idk. so i traded it in for a '50s strat, and it is just amazing. the tele was almost apologizing for its tone, while the strat punches you with its tone right in the face. this is for blues, though idk about other genres

Both. You will never be happy with JUST the Strat or LP; both are necessary to reach spiritual equilibrium.

ok so i tested a cheap stagg lp, a fender mim strat and a cheap stagg tele in the local shop today.
the strat wasn't bad but could've been much better.
the tele was bad and definitely NOT versatile.
the les paul sounded quite nice actually and i think this would be my best choice.

i didn't test them for long though so, would the lp do blues, indie, alternative, jazz and the santana sound well ?

^ Wheras i'm a Fender guy with midgethands, it's pointless arguing the merits of the two brands.

I'd personally go for what I'm planning to do with my Strat - i'm getting some variably overwound pickups (5.8k neck, 6.3k middle, 9.6k bridge) and a mid-boost preamp. I'll be rewiring one tone control as a master tone control and turning the other into an active 15db mid-boost preamp. Ultimate versatility.

Tele's are ****ty guitars with bolt on necks and can never match a Les Paul's sustain and playabilty and looks. Les Paul ftw!
