So my friend(Van The Darksyd, you may know him) is interested in investing in a new guitar, he wants something really versatile because he play everything, and he's really cheap, so he's narrowed it down to either a Squire Standard Strat or a Squire fat Strat. What do you guys think?

Go a fat strat if he can afford it. The humbucker is useful for crunchier metal tones.

1. Nirvana - smells like teen spirit
2. Prince - Smoke on the water

Elaborate on what?

Budget, style of music, etc.

But IMO he should get the Fat Strat. Much more versatile and better for heavy tones.

I'd go for the fat strat. If you play blues and jazz, then it really wouldn't matter. But if you played metal, the humbucker would make a difference.

There are no boring scales, just boring guitarists.

I don't think metal could be pulled off on a fat strat.

But really... there's no cookie. And if there was, you wouldn't get one.

Why not? Maiden did for years and years

Didn't they use single coils? I don't find that big of a difference between a Humbucker and a single coil in a strat, its more about the pots and the wood to me.

Not to mention the amp

If you want metal tones look into amps WAY before looking into a guitar

Maiden used super strats still a strat body though just with humbuckers in it. I think now they use hot rails which is a single coil sized humbucker
