Epiphone G-400
Epiphone G-310

is there a big difference between the guitars other than the pickups and pickguard?

If we did tune using the 5th fret on the G string it'd be a C. At the moment it goes G B which stands for George Bush. So obviously GB doesn't want you to C the truth! To the conspiracy cave!

Don't get the 310 (assuming you are looking for the SG tone).

It's alder bodied and a cheap-o bolt-on neck, as opposed to the mahogany body and less cheap-o set neck of the G400.

I'd suggest a Samick Torino over either of them though .

^I'd let a pro look at it. Once you get into the technicalities of screws...well, it's just a place you don't want to be, friend.
