I'm making quite a large Koi fish pond that I think is a £1000-and-over job (just the materials alone, including an Econobead EB50 Filter, pond liner, Koi etc). I've taken pictures of the before and after procedures if you're interested. I'll bump this up when I update what i'm doing. Well, I thought it was interesting.

Here's the before shot of the garden near the decking. I'm hoping to build a large pond (haven't decided how big I want it yet but I have an idea) complete with a small bridge thing.

05-07-07

I've dug 3ft and I'm keeping it that way. Right now, it's raining so i'm going to do more tomorrow. The pond is going to be a lot bigger than the hole you see now:

06-07-07
I got up today at about 10ish and started to dig out some more earth. The shape of the pond is really coming out now but it's still no where near done. Pictures will be coming up soon but I need to take a shower first. I'm going to carry on now - it's 12pm now and it looks set to rain despite what the weather forcast says.
Okay. Turns out the weather forcast was right, I was wrong. It's not going to rain. I can't be asked to continue digging - I'll do the rest tomorrow.

During the weekend, all that sand will be gone and dug up. I've still got a lot more bricks to remove but imagine a square. This is the square i'm using for my pond. The patch of grass there on the right is where i'm building a bridge towards the decking. This is why I haven't dug that part out.

07-07-07
I got up a little earlier today at 9:30AM. I ended up going to some aquatic specialist which took me about 2 hours because there was a lot of traffic on the M25 - that and I went to Guildford when I needed to go to Reigate [miscalculation of routes]. Anyway, I'm skipping the econobead filter and I'm getting a simple Vortex. More advice tells me Econobead filters aren't as easy to maintain than a Vortex. The only trouble I have with it is that it's not self-cleaning and I need to buy a UV Filter. Pictures are coming soon.

08-07-07
Alright. So I started to shape the pond. The current hole is about as far as i'm going. I just need to cement the sides to keep it from falling over. I've levelled the surface of the pond and I think I'll need another day or two to do the finishing touches.

Here are some other pictures - UG won't let me post any other pictures.

10-07-07
I didn't really do much yesterday to be honest because I was tired and besides there wasn't much to do other than wait for the pond liner and underlay. Today the Skip came but I'm going to need another one [and maybe another after that]. I'm going to get my Vortex and UV filter in a minute but I also need to clean out all the mess before I install the filter. You'll see pictures tonight.

Alright, I got a waterfall for my pond including a filter. See page 3 for pictures. It won't let me post anymore on this post.

11-07-07
I've cemented the sides so that the earth on the top won't slide down. I've also put some rubber lining in the pond. Once the actual lining comes in tomorrow, I'll put that on top. The first rubber lining you see is just a pre-cover. When I fill the hole up with water, the first carpet lining will close up all the gaps making the lining extra tight and also I don't want the bricks to cut the black lining that goes on top.

Pics on page 3

12-07-07
Alright. It took me 6 hours to fill up the pond. I've yet to cement the remaining lining to the ground and I need to start clearing things up and decorating the edges. Pics are on page 5.

That's cool...Just what is the purpose of this pond? Decoration?

Also, aren't Koi supposed to live in at least 4 1/2 feet deep water? That's what I read...and 240 gallons per fish. Wow...that's a lot of work.

thats pretty ok I geuss. if had been up to me, i'd have moved it away from those bricks, cos theyre gonna start sinking in around the adge of the pond if you dont compress the soil underneath.

Get a lump of somthing heavy, and whack the soil down at least 10 times, over and over, otherwise it will sink loads after a year. Soon as the first rain comes youll notice. I'd put some sand down there too for a good flat foundation, make shure its all level.

Have you got a UV filter?, because they keep the pond clean really good, but dont kill too much of the algee that the fish tend to eat most of.

We used to have a pond full of koi carp, there was about 20 koi's, and about 10 other fish. there must have been at least £1000 worth of koi, they were all about 12-18 inches long. they were mahoosive. Unfortunatly, the pond floated itself out of the ground when a hose on the pump split in a frost. so there was about 20 fish flapping about like mud skippers in the silt. Poor things.

Make sure theyve got somwhere to shade in the sun, and somwhere to hide if cats are about. thats all ill say.

Good luck!

Yeah, I'll be moving that bricks out of the way later. Those bricks are going to be worthless anyway once I've completed the main rim of the pond. At the moment, it's hard to continue digging - it's hard concrete. I'm going to make sure it's level in the evening - it's not raining heavily. I haven't got a UV Filter - I'm told the Econobead Filter technology [works like stones continually breaking down dirt so that it is no more] will do the job and keep the pond extra clean. I'll be sure not to get rid of all the Algee. My uncle is giving me most of his Japanese Koi. I can't believe how expensive they are - £350 for 2!

Thanks for the advice.

Ah, thats allrght then. Are you planning on dropping a molded pond in, or using vinyl sheeting? id seriously look at finding a molded pond, saves alot of hassle.

I want to see pics when its done!

PLAN IT FOR GODS SAKE! If you dont wanna spend 4x as much as you first hoped to spend, PLAN, PLAN and plan some more!

Also, make sure you have some sort of plants in there, or even a separate pond section where all the plants go in. It makes upkeep so much easier, makes a much healthier pond and oxygenates the water (vital for the fish if you want to stock the pond with them)

No no. I'm not going for a mold. I'm doing it myself. Ive had a look at a few molded ponds down in the Aquatic Specialists in Morden. I don't particularly like it. Don't worry, i'm up for the hassle.

Poster above: I've planned mate. Don't worry. I know what i'm doing.

Yay for Harmy doing something interesting! I made two fishponds in my front yard with my parents - we dug out two gardens and used besa blocks to build ledges around the border. The plan is to let some moss grow to cover the grey up a bit.
At the moment there are about 10 large goldfish in each pond, with a few hundred smaller fish we caught in a dam. The littler fish control the mosquito wrigglers fairly well and aren't being eaten by the larger fish (which sucks, I wanted to see some fish pwnage )

I think Koi need a minimum of 2-3 feet of water because they grow quite large. My dad has a massive pond filled with all sorts of fish and I know that they grow in relation to the size of pond they have and what you feed them so you might be ok with a smaller pond.

And if you have a big Koi and small goldfish, the Koi will eat the goldfish. Just in case you were going to do that.

Yeah, the pond is 15 x 7 x 3ft. I'm only going to put Japanese Koi in there.

Given enough space goldfish can get quite a bit bigger than 16".

Edit: Wikipedia says they can get as big as 23 inches.

Nah. It was just an idea I wanted to do. It seemed too good an idea not to waste and the garden lawn looked a little blank. My mother wasn't very happy but she'll like it when it's done. It's just for decoration and I really like the sound of water. I'm thinking of puting a waterfall near the bottom left corner of the pond [not sure you can see it - where the rain-fall barrel is].

Yeah I've wanted something like that myself, it's so peaceful. Once in france I came upon this pond with goldfish and koi fish, it was so... calm. I wish I had pics but they're buried in a box somewhere.

Ooh, and get the waterfall! I hear it earns you bonuspoints.
