when i play a chord sequence how do i know what scale to perform a lead part or a solo in???

i know very little music theory but please help me

Usually you would look at the first or last chord in the progression.

well first, figure out what key its in, usually the first/most common chord. Then(what i do), find a scale that the song is in, and usually you will find your chords in the scale....its very simple stuff....scales make up everything. get a book called "Incredible Scale Finder" its really great. It has every scale for every note....and it has each scales position on the neck to, and thats where you will find the chords. If you dont really know how scales are formed or made, then get something different, this doesnt really explain scales, its more of a "damn i forgot this scale" sort of deal.
