I'm looking around for a nice tube amp, these hybrid things seem to be cheaper though. I plan to get out and try for myself but i was just wondering if they actually give you a tube sound, or are they just overpriced SS' ?

what's your budget?

being hybrid isn't necessarily the middle ground between ss and tube amps. and the fact that it's hybrid doesn't usually account for much; it's the other circuitry and components that can make the amp good or bad.

the most approved hybrid amp would be the vox valvetronix line, but i'd personally just go all tube if you don't need modelling.

yeah honestly... i'd go with a nice tube combo. if you're gigging you can always mic it.

that's a pretty decent budget. might as well go all-tube.

what styles of music are you into?
and what's your current setup?

also european prices are a bit different than in the states, depending on the amp.

still using my very first amp, peavey blazer 158, usually use a behringer x v-amp with an olp petrucci sig w/ steve's special in the neck and an air norton on the bridge.
as you guessed i play prog dream theater type stuff as well as ac/dc, maiden, metallica etc

hmm... well petrucci uses quite a few mesas, as well as the newer metallica (igh). but mesa prices are jacked up in the uk.

ah, maybe check out laney (VC or LC, i forget which is which), traynor (not sure about availability in the UK), or maybe a used marshall jcm.
