John
by Matthew Story, 2007

Acoustic three-finger accompaniment with a bouncing bassline and a little melodic-ish riff between verses. Think Richard Thompson style meets Paul Simon simplicity.

John left home when he was seventeen
To leave behind the lonely islands
He'd grown so tired of the same old scene
And weary of the water and the silence
His father said, John, won't you listen here
The mailand ain't got what you want, I fear
See, you won't do better, John, in the good Lord's world
Than a house on the water and a blue-eyed girl
It's here, John, it's waiting for you

The mainland city lights, they seemed so cold
The ladies never took the time for smiling
Twenty-two and John was feeling old
And dreaming of the summers on the islands
And every time he tried to clear his head
He kept on hearing what his father said
You won't do better, John, in the good Lord's world
Than a house on the water and a blue-eyed girl
It's here, John, it's waiting for you

And his ship pulled in back down on the beach where he first wen fishing
And he saw a face right out of a memory
She had hair black as a fresh-laid stretch of highway
And eyes blue as the island sea
And she smiled
And he cried
It's here, it's waiting for me

So now I'm home
I'll never need to go back across the water
I'll find myself a little place alongside the ocean
And spend my days with a fisherman's daughter
You were right, father
Oh, you were right
It's here, it's waiting for me

Nice song. Kinda reminds me of the prodigal son story. Was that what you were thinking of?
I'll be your number one with a bullet.

Reminds me ALOT of a Dispatch song, especially when you throw in the bouncing bassline and the acoustic. I really, really like it. Most songs that tell stories like this that I see here are pretty crappy, but you nailed it, great job man.

Not really, although that certainly works. I was kind of trying to write the anti-rock song. There are so many great songs about running off and finding adventure in far away places, and not nearly as many about the next page of the story, in which the guy gets tired of adventure, comes home, and finds a nice house and girl who makes a mean German potato salad.

And I'm not familiar with Dispatch. I'll have to check it out.
