How the heck do you mute the middle string?

i would play the 7 with my first finger and 9 with my pinky... and my first finger will just rest on the D string.. muting it

When you fret it, I assume you use you first finger to fret the 7 on the A string, so just tilt that finger so it rests on the D string enough to mute it
ohai little sig.

I use a combination of a light barre mute from my first finger and positioning my third finger to lightly touch the string while it frets the root octave (9th fret in this situation) for maximum mutage.

use your middle finger to gently rest it on that string to mute it, while your index holds the 7th and your ring holds the 9th.

index: 7
middle: rests on d string
ring: 9
