i'm a guitar player, picked up an old squier p-bass, and im trying to get good. but everytime i play with my pinky in certain positions for an extended amount of time it starts to cramp up. will this go away if i keep practicing?

Its very common when you first play. As you have surmised, the stretches required in a bass are far more than you need in guitar. The good news is over time, it does go away.

My only advice, is to stop when you start cramping and pick it up the next day.

Welcome to the land of the low! And eventually you too can hold your fretting hand pinky at a right angle to your index finger!
