Ok so I have a budget of £400 and am set on getting a Marshall Valve combo.
so this imiditatly pionts to a DSL 401, right?
well this was my plan until I seen a new, Vintage Modern 50w 2x12 combo for £399.
Now I dont think that I'll be able to try the VM combo at all let alone side-by-side, so I need your advice on which is better.

You found a VM for £399? I've only seen them for around £600, where is that?
VM's are supposed to be really good, if you go to the Marshall website they have a demo of one being played.

I played a Vintage Modern. It wasn't good. It sounded thin, and weak. But then again the JCM2000s aren't particularly great as Marshalls go either. Save a bit and try and find a JCM800 combo, they're the best IMO.
The Laney Thread are big and clever. No exceptions.

People hate the VM.

JCM800 combo FTW. Someone got one for like £200 recently on eBay.

Well the 100 watter head wasn't too good, but the 50 watt combo was better since I could have the volume a bit higher and it was only pushing two speakers instead of four.

I don't hate it. It's an ok amp. To get OD you have to turn both the Body and Detail yes. What I think is this though:
It's nice but not the best for the price. The thing with the drive is this:
The Detail is too thin and the Body too muddy.
So it requier A LOT of work to sound perfect.
The next thing was that I found that the drive transistions wasn't smooth, because first the amp was basically clean and then suddenly it had quite som gain and IMO it had too much gain for classic rock.

And if you want the classic Marshall sound an Orange Rocker 30 does it a lot better anyway and it's cheaper too.

thx for the reply,
Ill just let you know what my feelings (concerns) towards the DSL 401 are.
>From what I here changing the stock speaker to a V30 is an essential.
>Their is no presence control
>From other peoples experiences there is a 'lack of balls'?

Then concens with the VM.
> No D.I. out.
> probally wont be able to try before i buy
> From other peoples experiences 'its not that great'?

Just want to know from you guys which out of those 2 (VM combo + DSL 401) Which is better, keeping in mind that I can get them both (new from a shop) for the same price.

Well I think a DSL 401.

The VM isn't bad, but it's not that good either. It's just not as good as it should be IMO.

An old jtm or jcm800/900 combo would suit you much more than any jcm2000 IMO. They just have a much bigger sound.

yeah I know, but I just wouldnt like the responsability that would come with a Vintage Marshall such as the JTM or JCM series, not now anyway. You would forever be keeping an eye on it at gigs and stuff y'kno, so Id rather go with something that you could buy new.

well at the moment the DSL option is by far in the lead, so what are the reasons for this?

Well i accidently voted for the VM because i thought it said Marshall vintage combo . but i would go with JCM 800 if you have the cash.
