I've been messing around with this chord for a while now and I can not figure out what it is to save my life.... I'm thinking it's a D5 with an added 6th but I don't even know if that makes sense can anyone please explain what this chord is and better yet why it is that chord thanks.

e----5-----
B----3-----
g----4-----
d----0-----

and I'm guessing it's a D because it has 2 D notes in it, an A note which is the 5th of D and a B notes which is the 6th note of the D scale so...any advice or answers would be greatly appreciated

Im not sure, but if you play it as a broken chord, its the same thing as the "Pure Imagination" song from the original Willy Wonka.

I'd say Bm7, the fifth isn't a necessary chord tone.

Looks to me like a Gadd2/D, or a Bm7/D, or a D6, which is what you basically said.

It'd be Gadd9 rather than 2.

+1 for Bm7, although I'd say Bm7/D.

I'd just call it a Dadd6 just cause its easier then saying Gsus9/D or Bm7/D
but thats just me

There is no third, though.

yeah I know but the 3rd isn't really needed for it to be Dadd6 just like you don't need the 5th for it to be Bm7/D
you just replace the 3rd for the 6th

and like I said I just call it a Dadd6 cause I find it easier then calling it something else
