I'm just curious

tool's bass player, justin chancellor, has a very unique sound to me....is it his bass that produces that sound, or perhaps special strings? or is it the amp

anyone know?

If I recall correctly he uses Wahl basses or something like that. He also uses a pick. I'm not sure about his amp and effects.

Its Wal, and he uses it with a Gallien Kruger amp, he does use a pick, and he also uses a bass whammy pedal a lot, which is how he creates those high pitched sounds, he also uses a mixture of effects such as tremolo pedal (right in two) and flanger. He has a bunch of things that affects his sound.

His sound is composed of a Wal bass, which along with very unique pickups/electronics also has two outputs, one a normal 1/4 output which goes into a big pedalboard and GK heads going into Mesa cabs (I believe), and one XLR output which goes thru a preamp straight into the board to provide a clean sound.

The key to his tone comes in the bass itself. Wal basses are very unique, and are always made custom. Unfortunately, I dont think the dude who makes them does it anymore.

Okay, what the hell? If he ditched the pick? What the fuck is wrong with you? He is so good BECAUSE of his pick. The pick MAKES his sound and his lines. GTFO. Beyond that JC has his unique tone that consists of his Wal bass, his GK stack and about 6 pedals, of which I now forget. There was a thing in bass player about his rig but I lost that issue.

I find it funny, that I did 46&2 to warm up before a gig and my guitarist was like "dude you cant play symphony X".
There is somthing about his playing that makes him unique, maybe its cuz he stands out more than other bass players.
Tool themselves have a very unique sound, that makes em a great band.

I kinda think its more just a combination of EQ and use of pick--like, I know he uses the pedals a lot, but to get his clean sound, it just takes a nice amp, clever EQ and a pick--I've got a somewhat similar tone with my bass, not perfect copy but its similar and I dont use pedals.

Yes, I was joking, I myself use a pick when I think it suits what I'm playing.

the ampeg preamp is a SVPCL pro and on the bottom of the rack i'm pretty sure one of them ( i think the other one is too) a stero crossover

also another unique part of his sound is he mixes his signal with mic'ed cabs and his bass split to a preamp and then DI'd to the board and he blends the two signals together (i'm asumeing the ampeg SCPCL )

he probably only uses maybe two effects at a time (well he does go crazy sometimes) but the situation he is in now probably is like this "well i play schism with this effect ... and in the grudge i use this effect so i have to keep it there" and so he proably only uses X pedal for maybe 3 songs and some of the pedals all the time and some pedals for 20 second warbles here and there and others for maybe a 20 second warble he only uses in one song.

in the new bass player magazine it diagramed his setup and it only showed like 7 pedals for his main sounds in this mag i found out about the bass into pramp DI'd plus miced speaker after bass head setup

lol never say JC should ditch a pick or you will get banned(i dunno if this was the reason, but was good enouph).
no one ever told victor wooten to ditch the fingers and start using pick.
thats just simple stupidity(im portuguese, sorry about the bad english).
everyone has the right to choose what to play with.
i started playing with finger, though was the best way to play , was all about fingers, but when i heard tool, theres was a bright light .
most of the songs are so ****ing simple, but yet so ****ing cool .
and a poser is someone who says that bass should be played only with fingers hes the one who doesnt know sh*t about playing bass but yet plays just to get attention, i play bass for love not "to be cool".
