I am completely self taught and therefore have a few hidden bad habits im sure.

My biggest worry is how i hold the plectrum.

I have always held it with my thumbtip and 1st & 2nd fingertips.
I have recently been trying to play with the pick held solidly between my thumb and 1st finger like this-

BUT, i find that the pick comes in at too much of an angle to the strings.
For speed picking it is considerably better and gives a better sound.

My question is, how many different ways are there to hold it and for which styles are they used? ie strumming, shredding?

this is how i always did it!
but i really struggle to play accurately like that, a riff like sweet child of mine just doesnt come out with the same clarity.

I hold the pick on the very edge of my thumb and index finger with my middle finger resting lightly behind the pick under where the thumb is. Also make sure that when you at picking, the pick is always 90 degrees to the strings.

Thats how I pick anyway and it gives a good attack.

wow like that helped.....well for me i hold it using my thumb and my 1st finger...and i try to slant the position of the pick to smoothly glide on the strings and not hit them so hard...and i also keep them as close to the strings as possible O.o
