Stack them with your amps natural gain they'll give you enough distortion for it. But with the mid hump TSes are famed for they probably wont giveyou a spot on metal tone.

they don't really give you metal distortion on their own
a 70s rock type tone at best if you're using it over a clean amp)

but if you have a tube amp thats already pretty dirty (some sort of 80s marshall for example), and you turn on the tubescreamer in front of it it adds more gain and boosts the amp to a level of gain it otherwise couldn't do (eg: plenty enough for metal stuff)
and the mid hump the TS puts out kind of balances out if you have a scooped EQ

what amp do you have now? if its a solid state thing don't bother with the Tubescreamer or overdrive pedals if you're looking for a metal tone

Yeah, and if you have a nice tube amp and want one, I'd suggest a Keeley modded TS-808.
