OK, so i know quite a bit of you probably have had or do have ur guitar hooked to a computer.

My amp i've been using is now dead and instead of buying a new one, i have a pretty nice THX sound system thru my comp. I've seen programs like Amplitube that can do all the fancy stuff, pedals, amps, cabs etc. Any other suggestions?

My main question is how can i do this? i've tried using an adapter and the line in of my sound card (audigy i think). Its laggy with static, not good! i've also tried running thru my amp and running from headphone out to pc which helped but still a lil lag and some static

im thinkin i need somethin like http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TubeMP/

What do i need on the computer side to have crystal-clear, lag-free sound?!

i use to use my line in, that worked fine for me with some tweaking, a line 6 guitar port is a great choice if your looking for some quality, either that or a pod, i dont think all the pods have a usb plug so you may have to check for that

If you want to do this for free you may want to look at just connecting direct to line in or Mic in and using a VST setup.

I use Freeamp 2 along with Mini-host. Everything you need is here:

Freeamp 2: http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2426.html
Mini-host: http://www.tobybear.de/p_minihost.html
ASIO4ALL: http://www.asio4all.com/

Freeamp is the VST plugin, mini host is the program that hosts the VST plugin, and it requires a ASIO driver and thats ASIO4ALL. For a free setup they work brilliantly

I would say line6 guitar port. I know everyone batters line6 gear (i have a spider II and i'll happily batter that!!!) but the guitar port for £100 is good i think. If im sat at my computer and feel like playing its great to be able to plug in and dial in the tone you want.

I use LINE IN without any issues but I'm on a Mac. Your sound card is the problem - a Guitar Port may be the answer as well as the ASIO4ALL. My PC Bud couldn't use Amplitube or Guitar Rig as he had terrible latency problems (cheap old laptop) - he bought a Digitech Multi-Effects pedal and plugs it in to his computer now - works sweet and he's recording like mad.
Now running an Eleven Rack with Pro Tools 10.3.3 - it's amazing and I'm having ball with it - worth every penny. PT 10 is tops IMO and the Eleven Rack is a work of art!

Wow... talk about good timing for a thread...

I was shopping for a new Amp for my Schecter but i'm having a lot of difficulties finding one...

I have some nice Logitech Z-5500 speakers I just bought though and I have a pretty good computer/sound card...

Guitar Port sounds like the best thing for me? I want to play metal (mostly death metal) can I get good distortion with this?

edit: seems like guitar port doesnt support 5.1 speakers or am I missing something?
edit2: nvm

The Line 6 guitar port is great but you might want to look into a toneport if you want to be able to record more than guitar.

Forget using Amplitube if you are experiencing latency. Yes, you can try using ASIO drivers but it may not work.

Like mentioned any FX unit will do the job. Guitar/Toneport is a good one. But if you don't want be tied to the computer then get any MultiFX and run it into the mic in or line in. If it's a mono unit and you use mic in then you should turn off the 20db boost that may add noise. If you use line in and a mono unit make sure you split the mono into left and right or you may have issues while recording.

Amplitube 2 is great for METAL... I use it a lot and also Guitar Rig for the limitless effects. But they're Software and you need to decide what you really need Hardware Wise - Guitar Port - Toneport or perhaps a better soundcard.

Uhm Deviant1853, i don't know if this is only me, nor do i know if you where aware of this, but i just downloaded minihost, and my anti-virus told me it was malware. I thought maybe it was a mistake, so i looked online and found that it is actually listed as malware http://www.prevx.com/filenamedays/070220086.html

Just thought i'd tell my fellow guitarists about this. If you intended this, then damn you for causing us harm. If you did not, and was not aware of this, then sorry for the accusation.

BTW, I was also told that it was possible to use FreeAmp3 on Reaper, but i do not have the least idea how. Help please?
Whats life worth if you're not willing to take any risks?~

I'm personally an IK Stealth plug user. Simple hardware, comes with Tracktion 2, Amplitube 2 Live, and several other programs (some loops and things). Sounds pretty good for $100 and it lets you buy other IK models on the cheap if you decide you want to upgrade. Everything in my profile was made using this setup.
