I have a starter guitar and a Marshall MG practice amp that is my friends. I'm still a beginner, but i have been playing for about 9 months now and im interested in finding new sounds. I don't have the money for a new amp, so i wanted to get some pedals. Do you think the sound from a boss ds-1 distortion pedal will sound much different from the overdrive on my amp?

You do not want to waste money on pedals for a crappy amp.

I'd suggest getting a Guitarport or something like that to help you explore the tonal universe.

^I'd let a pro look at it. Once you get into the technicalities of screws...well, it's just a place you don't want to be, friend.

A nice 15-30w amp is good, tone over power as you can mic it up later.
