lately im having problems with my ibanez rg 470. i took off the screw and retainer and can't get it back on. i tried changing the strings (which were to thick) but that didnt help. i know the screw isnt stripped because it will go in without the retainer. i can't think of anything else to do. can someone help me?

Try switching between the 2 screws or screw 1 side 1st, then another

with the retainer on no screw will go in the hole. but without the retainer any of the 3 screws will go in.

u sure your retainer bar isnt upside down? try turning it upside down/sideways

As said by madpickin' try tightening it by the low E first then High E...

For the tuning, I always did it this way. Put the strings but don't tune yet, put the retainer bar 2nd and level it as necessary then tune away. Is that good Madpickin'?

Hmm, i pretty much dont remove it at all, even when stringing. But if you've already gotten it out and you dont have any strings around, then screw the retainers 1st since the strings wont bother you.

Just gently screw them nicely, if it got stuck, unscrew it back and try again. Remember, you're screwing over bare wood of the headstock, you dont want to be enlarging the holes/stripping the wood inside the hole.

When you've gotten both screws in nicely, restring then level it like said.

Hang on...are you talking about the retainer bar or the locking nut here?

well now that i think about it pretty much both the retainer bar and the locking nut.
#18
you haven't really answered the question - it's either one or the other

Are you talking about the locking nut that clamps the strings at the headstock, or the retainer bar that sits behind it and maintains the correct string angle for the locking nut?

I knew you would

It hadn't even occured to you that this might be the case, due to the complete absurdity of it...

TS - only you know why you felt the urge to completely remove the locks from the nut. You aren't trying to put the inserts back upside down are you?

i don't think its broken because when i put any screw over through the retainer bar it just wont seem to screw in. i think something is wrong with the hole by the low e and a string side.
#27
you put the screw over the retainer bar and hole by the low e.... huh??

i dont think you know what a retainer bar is, this is getting more confusing...

ok now i think you're talking about the nut, make sure they're positioned correctly, see bottom of my post too.

I'm positive you're talking about the locking nut and not the retainer bar, although either way you weren't supposed to remove it. You just loosen it a litle so you can feed the strings through it.
