Elton John wants the internet shut down because it is destroying music.

The 'Candle in the Wind' singer believes cyberspace is stifling creativity
and lowering the standards of popular music.

He told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "The internet has stopped people from
going out and being with each other from creating stuff.

"Instead people sit at home and make their own records, which doesn't bode
well for long-term artistic vision.

"Hopefully the next movement in music will tear down the internet. It would
be great to see the internet shut down for five years and see what sort of
art is produced over that span. I'm sure, as far as music goes, it would be
much more interesting than it is today."

Despite describing himself as a "technophobe", Elton has previously used the
internet to his own advantage.

His 60th birthday concert at New York's Madison Square Garden in March this
year was streamed live over the web.

Elton has also made his entire back catalogue available for digital
download.

However, he remains convinced the internet is responsible for slipping
standards in the music world.

He said: "In the early 70s there were at least ten albums released every
week that were fantastic. Now you're lucky to find ten albums a year of that
quality."

because taking the greedy corporate side of music away, leaving people to make their own music how they want free of business aspects with no fear of having to sell out and compromise artistic vision of money ... is a terrible, terrible thing.

i imagine though ... he means people just purchasing certain songs instead of an entire album ... maybe he has a point ... no, not really.

If they shut down the internet the world would go nuts.

And how would one shut down the internet ?

I was invented to never go down.... cold war remember ??

Unless nobody has electricity its staying up, ever then you can run a server on a generator

the internet is how i discover most new music nowadays...that would wreck me...plus nobody would get to hear MY music nearly as easily as they can now, by simply clicking that little link in my sig (shameless plug)

Shutting down the internet would result in the Apocalypse. Humanity, at least the ones with computers, would go nuts and start killing each other. Starting with Elton John.
#16
Psh, ever since I saw him do a duet with Eminem I just haven't been able to take him seriously. Instead he just gets an "Oh Elton..." with a cheeky head shake tacked on.

The only way to shut it down is by clogging the tubes.

Now he has negative points. He has to kiss the internet's ass for 5 years to gain 0 points.

Do it, it's good stuff! (Admitedly, I've only listened to one song so far on his myspace, but it was good!)

I'd kind of like to see what happens. right now I'm not sure if I like the internet. Although I was just reading Manifesto, so right now I'm not too sure if I like anything.

Hey, why not give it a shot? We'll never know if we don't try! While we're at it, lets take all the drugs and weapons in the world and shoot 'em to the moon! Hell, we can even destroy all the video games if we still have time!

Seriously, though. Shutting down the internet would result in a calamity. Think of all the perverts and peadophiles joining forces to re-instate the internet and its power. Terrible.... just terrible....
I'd love to change the world, but I don't know what to do, so I'll leave it up to you....

Are you Superbad???

Yes, but he's right. So it's ok.

I take it you're Christian, or at least religious?

hey now, i didnt say anything about intelligence...adequacy is quite different than intelligence, and since when were there age restrictions on intelligence? experience perhaps, although im willing to bet i have experienced quite a few more undesirable situations than the average american kid on my block...when it comes to music though, especially the older stuff, i must say im not near as informed as i wish i was

edit: which is of course why i disagree with sir elton's statement to shut down the internet...then i wouldnt know about half the classic stuff i know about
#34
Good intentions...

Horrible idea.

=/

edit: Primusfan, is your avatar the cover of Milo Goes to College?

I love that album! Unfortunately, I can't seem to find it in any music stores around here.

Basically he's being selfish, "the internet should be shut down, doesn't matter about anyhting its used for other than people downloading my music"

I mean cmon,

I'm pretty much stuffed without my pr0n

How bout this, shut down the radio, MTV, and VH1? I think that will solve the problem.

I think he may be right. I mean he can't be saying that because he wants to make oodles off of the record industry. He's 60 years old. His career has already peaked. I think what he sees is really just that music isn't what it used to be.

Basically, I'll accept this when there is solid proof that its down to the internet.

At the minute what its coming across to me as "oh my toast is burnt, LETS BLAME THE INTERNET!"
