I was thinking, and it seems like MANY bands are better in their early years than later. Most likely because they start caring more and more about money. Some examples:

Santana (I like their new stuff, but in my opinion, it doesn't compete with the classics)

ZZ Top

The Allman Brothers Band

Chicago - Probably the best example I can think of in all of music:

Awesome Chicago: 25 Or 6 To 4

Dreadful Chicago: You're The Inspiration

I was trying to think; are there any bands that in your opinion aren't very good on their first albums but are really good on their later albums. I can't think of nearly as many.

Metallica is the prime example of this.

But there are also bands that have stayed good all the way through, such as Iced Earth, Iron Maiden (hit some trouble in the middle, but now they're back), and Dream Theater.

Are you guys even reading the thread? He's asking for bands that GET BETTER over time. You're all naming opposites.

Can't say I'm the same. I really like their blues material, but their best material, in my opinion, were the compositions of Betts. He was a really good composer, and after they kicked him out of the band, I didn't care for them all that much.

Led Zeppelin.

Of course all their albums are amazing and I can't say one is better, but a lot of us in the Zep thread like their later years. The guys were more experimental with their music and tried different styles.

Tell that to Pink Floyd.

Obviously you can tell by my avatar and username that I like their Syd barrett-era about as much as their 70s-era.

He is Legend, they're not very well known, but their first album sucked IMO.
Their newer (2006) album is AMAZING.

-Rise Against still rocks, though they may be starting to lose steam

Propagandhi's latest album is their best. They improved a lot. Avail puts out consistently good music. IMO Rage Against the Machine got better with time.

Porcupine Tree. I love their last five or six albums more then their earlier ones. I absolutely love them all, more I tend to listen to the more recent albums.

I don't think they kicked him out. I think he refused to join in when they got back together, but don't quote me on that.

Yeah, he was good. I really like Warren Hanes but I'd say Derek Trucks is just okay.

I think deftones are a good example, their first album didn't suck but their lastest stuff is much better.

Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Stadium Arcadium just wasn't as good as their other stuff.

IMO, a couple bands that have improved over time...

Iron Maiden (Seventh Son of a Seventh Son > Number Of The Beast)
Dream Theater
Incubus
The White Stripes
Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, All That Remains, Bleeding Through, and In Flames are prime examples of this.

Oh...and System of a Down too.

well. its all a matter of opinion. a band isnt neccesarily(sp?) better or worse as they go on, the music just changes subtly. Or in some cases, a lot. but how good or bad they are is determined by the fans. for example: fans of the old metallica, which i agree is best, wont like st anger, load, reload, maybe even the black album, as much, if at all. but other people that like more generic rock would like it more than kill em all.
#35
Metallica improved greatly between Kill 'em All and Master of Puppets then AJFA was a great album, Black was a good album then they dropped off into oblivion....

I think Sublime got better, John 5 has gotten better with each album but it's hard to tell with the bands who only have 2 or 3 albums out...

Not with Iron Maiden. Their middle years are their golden era.
I like way more the more modern stuff of Pink Floyd than their psychedelic era stuff.
