Im looking for a good amp to do hard rock/ metal. More metal, preferably tubes and under $500. Some stuff i play is Metallica, Pantera, Mastodon, RATM, System of a Down.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

I suggest you save up some more money. I don't know how much a used 5150 combo is, but it's the perfect amp, just a little out of budget, I think.

That's a hard price range to find a high gain tube amp.

You might be able to find a used XXX combo or 5150 combo for around that price.

I would recommend a Line 6 Flextone III. Sure they aren't tube, but they sound good and have a lot of headroom for a SS amp.

Used 5150 combo if you just want balls out uber great gain. Look into the B-52 if you want a bit more versatility.

Peavy ValveKing 212? Im still gonna try to play all of them, but what about a valveking?

I own the Valveking 112 and its less than desirable for metal. It has passable cleans, ok distortion for classic rock, but it just does not cut it for metal imo. The b-52 or the 5150 would be a much better choice I think.

5150 would be perfect. People say they see combos for ~$500, but I've never seen them that cheap on ebay. They always wind up going for 6-700. But the B-52 has a good amount of gain for the price

Look into a carvin V3. they may get near that used. Also, if you watch used gear carefully, I've seein dual rectifiers go for under 500.

You've seen Dual Rectifiers go that cheap and you didn't tell me!?!? *smack*

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

Good for you. Have a cookie.

But really... there's no cookie. And if there was, you wouldn't get one.
