I hope you realise how difficult that'll be...

Not to put a downer on you but I used to work in the music industry. It's hard work and you'll need a LOT of money to get it started.

Not quite easy. First you have to have a recording studio, then a band that trusts you, then a way to sell records and still make a profit.

That's still gonna be expensive.

I used to work for the UK's biggest music distribution company, but I was temping and they fired me cos I'm going to uni and they wanted someone long-term, plus I took a week off for a sore throat, took the piss a bit

Basically any bands you have you're gonna need to promote a lot, and be able to make lots of EPs and get a larger label to distribute your CDs for you.

If you plan to distribute them yourself you're gonna need to be able to pay for the mass production of them, which won't be cheap. And let's not even get started on vinyls...
#13
actually i have about 3 bands that trust me, and a artist that is probably gonna sign first cuz she's my best friend. i'm working on the studio and a way to sell them will come to me pretty fast cuz i'm all ready getting ideas

but yeah i'm gonna start finding the means of distributing i know that my friend probably will be willing to work for me in fact a few of them may work for me at low wages so i'll start planning this

so basically you've made me more determined than ever to do this so i have so say thanks where it's due

How will you pay for the production overheads?

And how will you get interest from a distribution company to distribute your stuff to other parts of the country?

And will you be doing vinyls? because you can't just cheaply burn them off the pc...

i like new dawn records

I'm pretty sure sub-pop doesn't have a personal recording studio, and they're pretty succesful for being an independent label.

Yes but they get universal to distribute for them, so that's why they're doing well...

i have a year or two i'll be working on that and figuring all the ends and means to do so cuz i got nothing better to do i mean really what should focus on school

Don't even listen to Negative Nancy over here..

Greg Ginn started from his label, SST, from scratch, with just his band, then it grew to like the biggest indie label of the 80's. So just believe in yourself and work hard, dreams come true

that said, New Dawn sounds pretty lame. You need a name that's sticky, like "Ferocious Lions" or "Sexatronic Records"
#23
I'm pretty sure that's already been taken, I've dealt with monumental cds at work. There's nearly as many labels as there are bands, so you'll have to be pretty original

And by that I mean the costs of making the CDs and vinyls and of keeping a website going and the effort it'll take to find somebody to distribute for you...

I don't mean to be a party pooper though. Running a record label sounds really good and if you think you can handle it, you should go for it.

Anyway, SST was that the company that signed The Smiths?

I don't wanna be a downer

I think most important, other than having a website and sexy logo, is having connections further up in the music industry. The biggest companies for that are like TEN, warner, SonyBMG, etc. YOu might not need those if you want to approach local record stores directly and ask if they'll stock your music, but if you're going to contact a big shop like.... erm, I dunno, wall mart? they'd probably want you to contact their distribution company about it. Though you wouldn't need to worry about that until after you've made the CDs and stuff!

Do you think you'll do vinyls as well? because I have no idea how they're made

I don't think vinyls would be too profitable in this day an age and for a struggling young company it just wouldn't be worth it.

Not sure, but I doubt it. it was based in California

I'll probably start my own label someday...if you don't want Sexatronic, it's cool cause I kind of favor that name

Ahh i see, it won't be then lol. Was just curious.

Ive liked the idea myself but id rather concentrate on my band the now.

However i've always wanted to produce an album, perhaps Snoop's next album or a Queens Of The Stone Age album.

That'd be epic.
