ALL ROCK/INDIE RECOMMENDATIONS GO HERE NOW OKAY? - theguitarist

Old Classic rock recommendation threads: 1 2

OldIndie recommendations thread: Clicky

Welcome to the Modern Rock recommendation thread! In theory it will build in time, and is designed to give everyone a quick easy insight into a lot of bands. Add your suggestions about what bands should be added and what album is a good place to start.

First of all, what is defined as Modern Rock. Well hopefully, you know what Rock music is, so the bit that may need defining is "Modern". Anything after about 1990 goes in here, before that is generally put in either Classic Rock, the 80s forum or Alternative & Indie.

It's a funny one though, and the lines between Modern Rock and some other forums, especially Alternative & Indie, are pretty blurred. If a band is on this list though, it's fine to discuss them in here.

Ok, this list is going to be much like that of the metal forum... we're going to try to sub-genre as best as possible, simply so people can link styles they like to new bands they might not have heard of.

Now, the main thing here is that we don't want ANY metal, punk, emo, nu-metal, classic rock etc bands. They don't belong in this forum. Some of course will borderline, but we'll judge them on their individual merits.

So please, put suggestions in this format:

Band Name (as a link to official website or MySpace if possible!) (Suggested album listening) - Sub-Genre.

Now, all final decisions on everything in this thread will be mine and UtBDan's, so there

I'm also gonna give FrenchyAwards by reddifying the albums that I personally recommend.

The Frenchy Award in all it's Moognificence (<3 Carmel)

Many thanks to Alix_D and Lazy for the previous thread.

Nooo, you done gone destroyed my thread AND didn't include;
Hard-Fi - Stars Of CCTV (Brit-Rock)
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever people say I am, that's what i'm not (Indie)
Goo Goo Dolls - Dizzy Up The Giro (Soft/pop rock)
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm (Indie)

Two are Indie, but as you say, blurred line and they're rejected as much as accepted in that forum.

Not having Dirt beside AiC is a sin.

Facelift > Dirt.

I thought having Jar Of Flies in there would be better than having Dirt too, to give more variety, and I was trying to keep it to 2 album per band.

Goo Goo Dolls are there already.
I'll add Hard-Fi in the morning.

Not sure about the other two, I'd've personally put them in the A&I forum, but I'm not sure.

I know it's a little detail, but I disagree with Shake Your Money Maker/Lions being the recommended albums for the Black Crowes. Amorica, Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, and Three Snakes and One Charm are all far better then those two mentioned. I also think that they don't fit in the Grunge section either.

It's the "Grunge/90s" section, they're kind of 90's rock I guess.

BrainDamage: I've never listened to them, all I know about them is that Jimmy Page played with them for a while. I'll change the albums though, and if you've a better suggestion for sub-genre I'll change that too.

I don't want this to turn into a list of every MR band that's ever existed though, so I may take out some of the ones that I've never seen talked about in here sometime.

I've always considered them hard rock, though my definition of hard rock might be a little different from that of those around here But either that or even revival rock would work, because they are certainly not grunge.

Russian Circles (Enter)- Post Rock

Toast Machine (Rock Wattage EP)- Funk Rock.

But, then again, they aren't JUST funk rock. They splurge out into other genres. They're more jam, but, then again, they're not....=/ Just listen to them, and judge for yourself.

And I would add "Spiderland" to Slint. It was more of an influence to post rock than "Tweez", IMO.

The Mars Volta (De-Loused In The Comatorium/Frances The Mute) - Alt Rock I guess?

My roommate last year had a foamy cow awfully similar to the Frenchy award. We threw darts at it .

Obvious ones are Billy Corgan, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlain's solo albums, and also Zwan's album.

All different from Pumpkins, but all great too, although I haven't heard Iha's album myself, I've heard good things.

I also suggest (might be very hit or miss this) some of those post-rock bands in the 2nd post, espcially 65daysofstatic. Completely different sound to SP, but similar in some key ways at the same time (powerful drumming, layered music and both have created som simply beautiful music)
